So, I’m trying to get an MLP fan friend to see the movie sooner than later. Their concern was that they’d have to play catch up on alllll of the seasons up until 8 before watching.
 
But I told them basically that the only stuff they ‘must’ watch before that is up through season 3, and maybe season 4. I haven’t decided yet whether the s4 premiere/finale fits better before or after the movie in terms of twilight’s character progression.
 
Bear in mind too, Allspark / DHX had been working on the movie for a very long while, that’s why it ‘feels’ like an earlier season in terms of canon. The only thing beyond s4 is, they spent a little time doing animated cameos of some s5 characters (such as Tree Hugger, Moondancer, & Starlight) for a few seconds during the first big musical number. That’s it.
 
So would you guys say the only ‘required’ viewing to catch up on the movie’s ‘backstory’ is up through s3? or s4 too?

Yeah, probably. It helps they never even showed either of Twilight’s homes from the series,  
which would be the most blatant visual cue for s3 < - > s4.

If we wanna get really technical, Twilight had an even earlier ‘origins’ home in the very first episode of MLP FIM,  
with a return to it for one s5 episode. Her ‘magic studies tower dorm’ or whatever it was.  
Even that wasn’t in the movie. Or at least unrecognizable in that version of Canterlot.

Speaking of the movie, we have this animation reel, this animation reel with a special unused scene where one of the pirates got their butt kicked by AJ, and now this animation real which includes a few shots that aren’t available in the final version of the climax.

That got me thinking, though. Captain Celaeno’s parrot crew against these freaky harpy pirates… I wonder how that scene would play out.

The movie is on Amazon Prime’s streaming service I believe. Gotta watch it again sometime.

Do I have to revive this thread by myself by searching through the forums?
 
Why do I have the feeling that the MLP movie won’t be considered timeless anymore and it won’t age very well after almost two years?

Tempest’s backstory gets to me every time.

Finally got the japanese version of mlp movie! Was quite pricey, but worth it for a nerd.
 
I hate that they cropped the edges of the video, definitely leaves characters out of sight sometimes, mostly or entirely. Now I know what it must feel to have random anime titles cropped, heh. At least I can always mix the japanese track with an NA source video.
 
None of the songs are dubbed, but that’s fine and expected.
 
All of the original mane 6 & spike from the japanese season 1 & 2 are in it, so that makes me very happy.  
I especially love the Japanese voices for Twilight and Rainbow Dash.
 
I like most of the other voices too, and have put up a bunch of examples of Tempest Shadow for now.
 
Her Japanese VA is Sanae Kobayashi.
 

 

 

How weird is a criticism of the MLP 2017 movie is that the animation is too fluid from the show’s animation?

I mean it’s bad that a theatrically released film looks like a theatrically released film and not a TV movie?

I usually enjoy the movie as it is and ignore the criticism as best as I can. It helps me love it even more.

The movie has the same Japanese VAs / Seiyū since season 1.  
Although, I’m not sure if they’ve gone beyond season 2 for dubbing in Japan,  
but they’ve done most or all the Equestria Girls media too.
