I see Grubber as this movie’s example of the Yin and the Yang; you have the comedy relief on the good side, that being either Pinkie Pie or Spike, and you also have the comedy relief on the evil side. The latter of course being Grubber.

Hey.
So I was catching up on a lot of episodes and from the first few minutes of S8E01 it seems like I’d have to watch the movie too. From what I read about it when S6 was still airing I figured I wouldn’t care much about it and could skip it without missing much, like with EqG. Neither is correct, though, right?

See, this is why they shouldn’t have set the movie at a specific spot in the timeline. It causes nothing but problems.
The crew should’ve committed to keeping the placement vague. It’s pretty clear that was the original intention.

To me, it has two issues:
*It artificially creates the plothole of them not seeking the help of the Pillars and all those other allies that came after the movie was written, and thus we aren’t supposed to think about. If the placement was vague this would be much more negligible.
*It could discourage non-fans from watching the movie themselves, as they would think they’d have to first watch the first seven seasons just to follow the movie, which is not what a movie meant to appeal to a general audience - even one based off a show - should do. Obviously this problem isn’t there but those who haven’t watched the show don’t know that.

No, but the fans will note their absence since the film explicitly takes place after season 7. It’s a plothole you can’t even blame the film for since it clearly wasn’t meant to have a fixed point in the timeline.

It’s not a necessity, really. I would personally recommend you watch it but that’s only because I happen to really like the movie.
The most you really need to know that the movie doesn’t fully explain is that the long-lost society of Hippogriffs turned out to be seaponies who were in hiding until the Storm King was defeated.

The Movie isn’t strictly necessary, although it provides a lot of context for episode 6. Out of The Mane Six, The Movie is only really about Twilight and Pinkie; pretty much all the character growth comes from the new characters, so decide for yourself if it’s something you want to watch.

I also definitely need to know about the society of Hippogriffs, that seaponies are now canon in FiM and who the Storm King is because hoping for a “oh, and remember how we met X?” in an episode doesn’t sound great.
