The G1 Appreciation Thread

Munchy.
 
She has got to be one of the oddest G1 MLP’s. I’d say top five. Apparently she has a fondness for junk food, and possesses the uncanny ability to turn sports equipment into burgers, french fries & hot dogs.

Personally I am always a little weirded out by the whole idea of ponies eating meat (which also suggests the raising and processing of livestock). It’s kind of disturbing, yet kind of funny too in a completely ridiculous & nonsensical sort of way. I’m so conflicted!

This is some of the most detailed art I have seen done with MS Paint. I didn’t think anything done with that old program could look this good. Great job on the outfit.

that’s not even the half of it. Just wait till you see the background I’m working on. There’s a lot of stellar MS Paint tutorials out there that just blow your mind, if you find them. I’ve never even been good with backgrounds, but the tutorials- man!
 
I’ve been using MS Paint for years, and am hesitant to try and work with more complicated programs because I’ve tried and failed in the past. So for bubble style ponies like Osharenas, MSP is perfect.

also, also, we need more art of Yum Yum and Munchy. I can just see them going to town in eating competitions and being rivals. XD

The idea of ponies eating meat doesn’t bother me as much provided they’re not eating other magical intelligent talking creatures (like other ponies).
 
This character is a bit interesting and weird (but I like her despite that). I don’t think I’ve seen a pony with multiple cutie marks all over their body like that. It kinda reminds me of the Cutie Pox episode in G4. Were there other G1 ponies like this?

Several. The whole set(s) of Twice As Fancy ponies (or the Party Ponies in the UK) and a few other sets that were not called that but had symbols all over their sides/backs, like Pillow Talk from the Slumber Party pack, or the Sunshine ponies as a couple examples.

It’s a rare disease known as TAF, and not to be mistaken with Cutie Pox. While similar in some ways, unlike the Cutie Pox there is no known cure.

Night Glider is quite lovely indeed. She’s kind of different from all the other TAF’s in that her symbol is a complex arrangement of moons, stars and planets as opposed to the same one or two markings spread all over. Also one of the coolest names in G1, with a great backcard story to match. I mean, what’s not to love about a night dwelling interstellar space pony?

That’s probably why she stuck out to me so much. I didn’t notice it until you brought it up but the designs she has on her body are different which makes her stand out a bit more compared to the others. (The color scheme and the space theme she has helps too.) She’s really beautiful.

I wonder if the mention of cutie pox in g4 originated from or was inspired by the TaF ponies. That’d be pretty cool, actually.

I wouldn’t be surprised if it was. Friendship is Magic has made references to previous generations multiple times throughout the course of the series.

See, that last part of it being in the realm of “I’d like to think…” is what keeps me from being a fan of that pairing. She labors under the idea that the Teddy we see every episode isn’t his true self, but it’s the person she thinks she can turn him into that’s real, but there’s just nothing we see that supports that idea as he goes right on showing no sign of redeemability.
 
She seeks to turn him into someone he is not and has no interest in becoming; she doesn’t love the person Teddy is, but the one she thinks she can reshape him into. Meanwhile, the Teddy we get in reality is an unrepentant bully who isn’t above causing her physical harm.

The happy ending I want for Sweetheart is for her to get it through her head. Both that you can’t make someone into something else, and also that she is worthy of the same kindness she gives. You deserve better, girl!

I feel like G1 show is too niche for there to have been any sort of shipping between any sort of side characters, at least around here. But to be fair, overall popularity for G1 seems to have increased.

I am not really sure what you mean about Sweetheart trying to turn Teddy into something he is not. In Teddy I see basically a child who acts out, for reasons unknown, because he is insecure. Quite often, the Teddy that we do see is a false-self; the facade that he puts on to trick others into thinking that he is tough and in control when really he is far from it.
 
Although it is sometimes hard to see it, Teddy does have redeemable qualities, like the time he overcame his fear of water because of his inability to swim to rescue his distressed cousin. Sweetheart helps him get in touch with his true self, the honest Teddy that feels awful when he realizes that one of his pranks actually caused real hurt, the Teddy who trusts and confides in Sweetheart.
 
Of course we never really got to see what ever came of Sweetheart & Teddy, but MLP’s are idealized things. I don’t imagine that Teddy’s ill treatment of Sweetheart was ever meant to be a precursor to an abusive relationship, and certainly I do not condone abuse in the slightest, so I respect your opinion of the ship even though I don’t entirely agree with your assessment.
 
Anyway, I am pleased to see you joining our little thread and I thank you for all the G1 related contributions you have made to Derpi over the years.

I know that.Perhaps it’s an effect of having hung around the g4 fandom too long, as they ship ponies that just breathe the same air. I never considered myself a shipper.

no, Spitfire of g1. The shape-shifter ostrich (he and the other Sqree) in “the golden horseshoes” episode. (after which, I assume, g4 Spitfire was named)
 
that drawing absolutely killed me. Holy heck. It was good experience going all out with that much detail and background, for sure, but tiring. I’m glad it turned out so well, though, seeing as I did it in MS Paint with a mouse. I might deviate from lolita style in my next pic. (2 more commissions to go) I wanna see if I can pull off visual kei.
