The Equestria Girls General Thread

Only the faithful.
So, Sunset’s chickens came home to roost in a big way in this special. I wonder if the villain of season 8 is someone Starlight screwed over and now wants payback. I hope so, She has a lot of baggage to answer for.

Applying realism to a cartoon and applying basic logic to it are two very different things.
Honestly, the SciTwi blackmail plot is something I had a problem with too. Cinch had no real reason to threaten Twilight’s future beyond “It doesn’t matter if we win, but it matters if we win”. It was dumb and unnecessary, and nothing came of it.

Trying to apply basic logic to something like capturing magic? Yeah, that makes your stance so much better.

And saying nothing came of it was silly. That pressure ended up turning her into Midnight Sparkle and later motivated her into staying at CHS.

Your complaints literally are just empty criticism.

Just because it’s magic doesn’t mean you don’t have to explain it.

In other words, it led into a shameless rehash of EqG1’s finale, and ended up not mattering in the slightest since Twilight decided not to go to the special school that Cinch was blackmailing her with in the first place.

I think maybe you’re just turning a blind eye to how flawed the movie is.

You not grasping something as simple as why a device absorbs magic is more of you problem than the film. It’s not rocket science.

You call it a rehash, I call it a brilliant call back for how far Sunset has become, so nope not buying the rehash criticism.

And for the last point, nah. You’re just whining about something that isn’t even a problem.

Since they did the effort of updating Sunset’s mane to show correctly from the left side (as opposed to being flipped horizontally like it was before), I’m wondering if they’re going to do that with some of the other pony characters in the new season of FiM.

Personally I find it classic Josh Haber. The plot is bunkum and a lot is poorly explained, but there’s so much cool stuff going on that it’s easy to forgive.

I thought it was one of Josh Haber’s better pre-season 7 work. The execution is good enough, but nothing spectacular with not too much standing out. However, unlike the majority of his other episodes, the concept is by default interesting enough for me to be engaged.

And you’re not grasping that having the movie’s conflict hinge entirely on having a poorly-explained (and logically impossible) device absorb magic at random is extremely lazy writing.

You call it a rehash, I call it a brilliant call back for how far Sunset has become, so nope not buying the rehash criticism.

That scene didn’t do anything for Sunset’s character that the climax of Rainbow Rocks didn’t already do. It was clearly intended as a bookending, but it was ultimately redundant.

Also, it was dumb that the only reason that Sunset even won that fight was that Spike called out to Twilight. Spike, who had only gained the ability to speak earlier by complete coincidence. Or rather, narrative convenience.

BTW I should point out, the YouTube upload of Forgotten Friendship’s climax is already damn close to 1 million views. This is how popular EqG has gotten.

Poorly explain? More like you need to be spoon-fed obvious information.

And there was nothing redundant about it seeing as those we’re two different scenario. And there’s nothing dumb about Spike calling put to Twilight considering Spike was her only friend at this point.

@LanceOmikron
Why would Twilight getting snapped out of her psychotic break by her best friend calling out to her be dumb?

On paper, the act itself was fine. The problem is how it happened and the result of it.

Earlier, Spike gained the ability to speak by complete coincidence. A portal just happened to suck him in, and when it spat him out he suddenly was able to talk. Ask the writers how this happened, and they’d probably say something akin to “It’s magic, we don’t have to explain it.”

And then later, Spike distracting Midnight Sparkle is the only reason why Sunset won the fight. And in the scope of this movie, this is the only reason why the writers made Spike able to talk. The conflict is resolved by pure plot convenience.

How is anything about the Magic Capture Device obvious?

@Crystalis
Despite all the misgivings I have about FG and EqG1, I agree. After EqG1 clumsily started things off, Rainbow Rocks genuinely wowed me. It showed me all the potential that the spinoff really had. Now I always hope that we see genuinely good material from Equestria Girls. As such, the stellar quality of Forgotten Friendship was very gratifying to see. ^_^

It would’ve been the same if Spike couldn’t talk and just barked at Twilight, he didn’t give a speech or anything, he got her attention and her looking at him did the rest. That’s not the reason they made him talk. They made him talk because they wanted to still use Spike as a character but not need to use the dragon.

Also, that’s pretty clearly not what happened, he chased a jackalope through a bunch of portals but what clearly happened to change him was getting caught in a field of Fluttershy’s magic. You know, the girl that’s got a strong connection to animals? The dots are pretty easy to connect.

Also, yeah, there’s coincidence and convenience in plots to help events go forward. That’s just how stories go. I mean, it was coincidence that Fluttershy was standing outside the portal to pick up the crown. It’s coincidence that the Sirens were nearby and saw the ending of EqG 1, it’s coincidence that the siren’s magic didn’t effect the main characters, and it’s complete coincidence that Wallflower made her garden her desktop wallpaper.
