Likely just for convenience in animating. Might be worth asking, actually.

You know, that’s exactly it. I remember Lauren saying something that all the models were supposed to be different, but time constraints meant that they had to re-use the same flash builds. I can’t remember if it was her DA or another source.
 
I think we’re seeing more models now because they don’t have to build the show assets from scratch every year.

And the reason they’re not changing it now is because of the unwritten rule of animation where you never permanently alter a character’s appearance without a plot-related reason or a reboot.

Also, I find it funny that soccer moms were angry at Equestria Girls for portraying the female characters as “too sexy.” You could pay me a million dollars and I still wouldn’t find any of those similar-body-shaped, big-headed, wide-eyed, long-legged, flat-chested Skittles people attractive enough to want to do the schmiggity with.
