Sata Andagi!
So after watching the season finale for the series I kinda have mixed feelings on it. On the one hand it was a really epic way to end the series going out on an Avengers Endgame level of epic, but getting to the really kickass parts of it were the hard part.
I guess the first thing I should say I don’t like about the finale was Discord turning out to be Grogar, it seemed like a really week excuse for a twist that also underminds Discord’s character growth during the series. I know he’s the lord of chaos and all but that doesn’t mean he should do stupid stuff like bring back all the major villains of the series just to try and boost Twilight’s confidence, especially since Tirek had betrayed him once before what made him think he wouldn’t do the same to Grogar. On top of that the mane characters also seem to not really punish him for doing something so awful, even if he had good intentions or tried making it up to them. As a big Discord fan this disappointed me very much.
Another problem with the finale is that it’s a little too fast paced, I understand it’s a two part special so they don’t have a lot of time but if you’re going to go out on a high note then you should have made this a three part special so you pace yourself with the story, action, characters and such. And I know there are only so many episodes in a season but then again it’s not like you can’t cut down some pointless episodes like Twilight returning an overdue library book or Applejack and Apple Bloom looking for an ancient forest spirit.
Finally the last thing I have to say is the fact that we didn’t get Grogar as the actual final villain which I think would have been really awesome and could have been like a Thanos level threat to Equestria, but because they had to go with the twist we instead have the other three villains which isn’t a bad thing just not as strong for an ending.

Now with all that said there are a lot of things I do like about this finale, again it is a pretty epic way to go out. The Pillars fighting Tirek, Starlight fighting Chrysalis, Cozy becoming an Alicorn which I totally called back in season 8, even the ending battle where they get all the unicorns, pegasi, dragons, changelings, yaks and earth ponies to fight the three villains is as epic a way to go out. I also like little touches like Pinkie getting ahold of Discord’s chaos magic which was pretty hilarious, and the students being the ones who helped gather the allies to fight back also showed the evolution of Twilight’s teachings.
And of course I also really loved The Last Problem and how it closed things up as well as showing us what the characters are like years later now that Twilight is a fully grown alicorn ruling over Equestria (P. S. Pinkie Pie × Cheese Sandwich I was so happy to see.)
So overall it wasn’t the worst finale I’ve seen, it just could have been a lot better, but this is kinda what I imagined how it was gonna end so at least I wasn’t too disappointed, but yeah there are some unsavory things agbout it whih is why it probably won’t make my Top 10 favorite season 9 list.

I think the biggest thing on my mind right now is how I just didn’t find Grogar that interesting, so the Discord twist just didn’t bother me at all. The reason I liked Shadow Play was because the conflict wasn’t just about a big bad showing up and trying to conquer the world. It was caused by Starswirl wronging a friend long ago.

So a conflict caused by Discord being flawed and a trio of villains that the season clearly focused on more is just more intrinsically interesting to me than Grogar potentially being a generic doomsday villain.

I think I’ve said it a few times now - sidelining Grogar and making him Discord are choices that can be judged seperatly, and the second is the problematic one for most people. (Not that there aren’t a few disappointed Grogar fans out there, but I don’t think they’re the majority.)

I think the problem is that Discord’s actions are left too unexamined. The idea is money in my opinion. I adore the idea of Discord being behind this, and that it’s his trickster mentor nature gone awry. But more should’ve been made of him making ammends, especially to Twilight directly.. Like, maybe he should’ve had to live without his magic for a few years.

Yes - him losing his powers would be one option. Another possibility is limiting his liability - like, maybe Sombra gathered the villains in the first place and Discord just hijacked the plan after he was defeated.

I dunno, to me that wouldn’t have made it that much better.

Discord in the premiere was completely cool with Sombra mindfucking EVERYONE and then faking his own mortal injury (breaking Fluttershy’s heart) if it meant Twilight would gain some confidence. That’s already reprehensible. He was complicit in Sombra’s scheme. Being the one who resurrected him just doesn’t add much to his guilt in my opinion.

Him doing nothing is something we’re used to by this point - him being behind it all is a different story. And did the Manes ask him for help? Or did they say they’d handle it?

@E-123
The Chekov’s Horn people had been expecting him to pop out of since Season 3?

I guess Faust’s original Idea did come to light with Twilight taking over for Big Sun.

It just seems odd the way they work. Celestia is the embodiment of the day, while Luna is the night. Along with Raising the sun and moon, There’s also Luna’s job of being a dream walker, so does Twilight take up that roll as well?

The school wasn’t come up with till much later. Twi succeeding Celestia was the original plan - and it could be said that forcing it several season late and in a different shape was not to the show’s benefit.
