Season 9 Discussion Thread [Warning: SPOILERS!!!!!]

Background Pony #0FA8
The finale had me questioning…

1. Couldn’t Starlight have easily taken on Chrysalis in a 1 on 1 fight? I feel as if in a straight fight, with no outside factors like the terrain, Starlight could’ve beaten her, especially since we’ve seen that Chrysalis really sucks at fighting.

2. Just how powerful is Twilight? That moment when the trio blasted them, and they thought she was going to die, couldn’t she have just put up a shield to block it? Hell, a big part of the castle was used to block their combined blast for a good 30 seconds, so Twilight’s magic is weaker than that?

{ I’ve decided maybe I should also spoiler stuff on this finale thread just in case for people who stumble across it, eheh… }

So, are we supposed to be using spoiler warnings for the final episodes still in this thread?
I’m under the impression that it’s not completely necessary, also given the huge warning about spoilers in the thread title.
Is it just people doing it to be polite and/or out of habit, or should I do that here too?

You kind of have a point. It would seem that the whole ‘rule together’ thing was mostly lofty words from Celestia & Luna (& Twilight?) without any concrete plan or setup, because besides mentioning it there wasn’t really any attempt to have them all move to Canterlot. At least Twilight figured out the next best option to reconcile that.

Well, their main concern was probably being unable to easily just go see or hang out with Twilight anymore, both because Canterlot is a fair bit further away than the castle/school of friendship, and also because Twilight would presumably be very busy with Celestia & Luna’s duties.

Regarding #1, judging from how Chrysalis nearly got stomped into the ground by Mean Twilight, I think she wouldn’t have had a chance without a power boost, unless she had a lot of surprise. If Starlight knew she had a power advantage over Chrysalis, not only can she teleport and self-levitate with a good ability to dodge, but Starlight can also use shield spells, so she could force her to waste power trying to get through.

Both of those (shields and teleports) are things Chrysalis has never shown evidence she can replicate, at least in this show, dunno about comics. The most sophisticated thing she’s done in combat is a “wall of force” kind of blast, which she did in I think the S5 finale, against Zecora, and it’s what caused her to win here, with a power advantage. Not anything her opponent couldn’t replicate.

Ironically, Cozy Glow got to pull off some impressive magic for having gotten her horn within the span of one day or so, creating a portal with her magic (to show the guards are still useless against supervillains), and pulling shields. Tirek seems like he’s an “earthbender” when he has power, which the S4 finale did back up actually, with what he did in the fight with Twilight.

(Is it just some quirk of changeling biology that she can’t do shield or teleport spells, a blind spot regarding magical knowledge, or…?)

I’m not sure if there’s much durability that shapeshifting grants Changelings, but I’m inclined to think taking a serious hit (which Starlight can dish out) forces them to revert, so it’s very questionable how much that would help in a fight against a magic user that can be good at keeping their distance.

To give other characters credit, I think Cadance, Twilight (especially considering “The Mean 6”), Celestia, Luna, Star Swirl, Shining Armor, and Flurry Heart (well, probably when she’s older) can all conceivably deal with Chrysalis under most circumstances, when she’s lacking in a power boost, from Shining Armor’s love, from love her hive would gather, or from Grogar’s magic.

(Should I also note both Celestia and Luna can teleport too?)

I think it’s more a matter of courtesy/force of habit than a requirement around here.

What I want to know (what I always want to know, really) is the target audiences take on it. You’d think over 9 years bronies would have come up with a way of sampling it…
