I think the same. None of the current four gens had anything in the way of shared continuity with each other – beyond some characters being reimagined for each new iteration, there are no links between G1 and G3, G1 and G4 or G3 and G4.
Likewise, I do not believe that there will be any links between G4 and G5’s continuities.

Am I the only one who thinks G5 will have no relation to G4 whatsoever beyond the names of the Mane 7 being used at some point? Like how G4 had literally nothing in common with G3.

Because this is 2019. Just look at the current roster of Disney movies coming out, all remakes desperately clinging to IPs to a fault. Same with Hollywood and the gaming industry, you need to have an extra-solid pitch to convince one of the big companies not to strip the heart and soul out of a series for profit.
So yeah, it is possible for one of the execs to go “Yknow, we kinda did catch lightning in a bottle with G4, even got a buncha free advertisement from those older creeps, how bout we play it safe and just… reboot that generation?”. Welcome to the Worst Timeline.

I definitely think G4 and G5 will be a LOT more similar than G3 and G4. Going back to Transformers, aesthetically and to a certain extent plot and tonewise, Transformers Prime was a LOT like the movies. A separate (infinitely superior) continuity, but the similarities were there.
…I’m not sure this is a bad thing. I like G4, and seeing them do something similar while hopefully fixing a few of the issues the setting has historically suffered would certainly sit right with me.
I mean what’s the alternative? Ponies IN SPACCCCCCCE? Ponies in a high school (done that). Ponies Unleashed, with all new edginess, swearing and sex jokes? Ponies in live action? Newborn cuties V2?

I mean, knowing that Hasbro/the show crew would have simply used direct reimaginings of the main G1 characters for FiM if they had had the ability to do so, the amount of G1 characters who were still reused in G4 (Applejack, Spike, Tirek, Grogar, Gusty) and the fact that the two most popular cartoons (meaning the first G1 cartoon and the current G4 one) are both focused on fantasy and light adventure more than on the suburban life but with ponies model that the second G1 cartoon and G3 ended up using, I think it’s a very safe prediction that G5 will use a similar fantasy setting and will feature reimagined versions of a lot of G4’s main characters.
But this is getting off-topic for this thread.

I feel FIM’s big issue in it’s setting has always been how ambiguously modern it is, and how it’s a kinda awkward hodgepodge of styles. The idea that G5 would be set in multiple different worlds, each with it’s own ‘theme’ pleases me, because it should result in a setting that feels a little bit more consistent.

I said it sounded interesting. I already know that every time an episode sounds promising, it’s going to end up being dissapointing for one or more reasons.
Well, at least the new pony Manga gave me a glimpse of what the show should have been, as opposed of what turned up being instead.
