I’ve heard people say that new writers should have to watch the entire show before they get to write. I think people are thinking too small.
I would estimate that my analysis of Season One took between 80 and 100 hours to complete, between watching and deciding what I wanted to say. My analysis is just things that I picked up on.
I have enough experience as a Game Master to know that if you’re taking your continuity and worldbuilding seriously, you should have a carefully maintained design document; almost like a staff-only wiki. Every character has a page that details their character, what ongoing plot threads they’re involved in, what information has been established about them and in what episode, as well as what underlying assumptions should be taken into account when writing for them. Every episode, location, plot thread, unique object and whatever else should have its own page, and ideally everything should be cross-reference-able.
That’s a lot of bookkeeping. Upon watching Season One, it becomes pretty clear that they weren’t planning on being that rigorous. And if the original creators weren’t, it’s a safe bet that later showrunners wouldn’t be either.
