Sweetie Belle looked much bigger in the ice cream parlor (like 3/4 the size of Rarity), but every other scene had her the same size she’s been since season one.

Spike is pretty much the definition of a character that went nowhere despite having many opportunities for writers to do something.

If living in a palace made of food and being friends and/or family with some of the most influential individuals in the country is “going nowhere” then I think your standards might be a tad too high IMO.

But Discord is more developed than Spike.

Basically, but it has never been explored any Spike always ends up going back to be Twilight’s personal maidguy.
 
This is expecially infuriating when you see how the protagonists already had personal arcs or changing points while Spike yet has to even start his own.

Exactly, we’re into season seven and Spike still has no arc, motivation or ambition of any kind. Aside from his Rarity crush which is more than annoying at this point.

The only thing that can vaguely pass as Spike’s ambition is his fantasy about being a knight and that thing seems to have been forgotten as well.
 
Christ, all what they needed to give Spike a somehow decent character arc was simply not forgetting he liked comic books, and then using that as a starting point for a little arc where he tries to use his own adventures as inspiration to start drawing his own comics, until he finally manages to get them published for real.
 
They even could use his little hobby to lampshade now and then the fact Spike has hands and that allows him to do things that ponies normally cannot.

Starlight Glimmer has an arc while Spike doesn’t.

Just admit the writers are completely incompetent when it comes to Spike.

Spike gets a good episode here and there but he’s largely looked upon by the writers (and even the ponies themselves) as being little more than comedy relief. Even the CMCs, trouble-making dorks that they are, view Spike as both immature and harmless.
 
I’m worried that Triple Threat (which might be Spike’s only episode) is going to be the return of Dumbass Spike once again, and that he also won’t be included as part of “Twilight’s family” in Once Upon a Zeppelin. It really depends on the writers in both cases.

Spike’s basically the quintessential example of “hit or miss” in this show. When his episodes are good, they’re pretty good. When his episodes are bad… well, there’s usually at least something in them that’s somewhat entertaining, but usually for all the wrong reasons.
