Both episodes indicate that evidently, Applejack can no longer get focus episodes without the writers having to create a character flaw that she’s never had before just so she can overcome it within that same episode.
It’s annoying. It makes me want Applejack to not have episodes anymore. Honestly, though, I would love it if she were to get an episode like Fluttershy Leans In, where she actually accomplishes a goal. That’d be especially refreshing since she’s been without goals for the entirety of the show.
The thing is, what goals do you give her? I mean, Applejack is already well known as an honest, hardworking pony. The Apple family name is both a part of Ponyville’s legacy and well respected. The other ponies who live in town think highly of her, the mayor has honored her on more than one occasion, and if her cutie mark story from all the way back in season one is any indication, she’s content and happy to be exactly where she is. There really isn’t anything left for her to achieve, which is probably why episodes where she has to overcome something are usually tailored to excesses of her virtues (e.g., overworking herself, being too bluntly honest, deciding she can’t come home without prize money she promised to bring back, and so on).
So yeah, I can see why writing for her is a problem, and why the “overcoming some obstacle” format is harder to work with her than it is with her friends. Unfortunately, neither issue has an easy fix.
