The color transformation is just a inevitable side effect of the love-sharing. However, changelings still can change their appearance even reformed, so there’s the possibility he retains his old form.

Mostly it’s like a meta thing for me, like I’m sad the writers decided that was how they’d make them “good”, y’know? I also really dislike their new design, but that’s secondary to it.

But that’s not really how it works. As Mildgyth pointed out, the change in appearance is just part of the transformation they go through when “reformed”. The actual thing making them “good” is a conscious decision to share love, rather than consume it like they always did in the past.

Like to add to what I said, I think a change that made sense would have really worked, like having the holes go away and making them look less amaciated and skeletal would have been really cool since it would have been like “They’re not starving anymore since they are sharing love”.

Yes, I understand what you mean. I guess it never bothered me all that much since a lot of the strong magic we see, both good and bad, seems to have corresponding visual effects in this world. But I do see where you are coming from on that.
If you’ll forgive my curiosity, if there was a way to come up with an explanation for the visual distinction, even a headcanon-y one, do you think that would affect your opinion at all?

With the weekend approaching, I think I’m a little extra glad I stuck with the US schedule for the episodes. Because if I am not mistaken, for those on the accelerated schedule, tomorrow is the episode involving Starlight switching Luna and Celestia’s cutie marks, and if that goes wrong in any way it might take until the US reaches that point in the season before the controversy dies down.
Still, the season has been very good thus far. Perhaps it will all be fine.

No argument here. I think Fluttershy’s has been the weakest thus far, but even there it was still an ok episode. They’ve really done a good job with this season.

I think that’s a positive for sticking with the U.S. schedule being a minority. Once the episode airs here, all the discussion and drama that comes from the episode dies down and we can just simply watch and enjoy it.
Also we don’t have to put up with Anonycat, that’s another plus. :p

Probably not. Mostly because it clashes so hard, practically to the point of retcon, with Thorax’s original episode and his “they accepted him in spite of his appearance” resolution.
Honestly too, I’m hoping that his brother actually points out their “you have to be like us to be accepted” hypocrisy in the episode or they at least acknowledge that Thorax isn’t entirely in the right. Maybe it’s just the synopsis not doing the episode justice, but “Conform to be like the group, even though you don’t want to, or you won’t be accepted” is seriously like one of the worst morals a show could do, especially in a show that’s preached acceptance as much as this show has.

it’s annoying because i GET the problem, and I agree that the synopsis makes it sound really bad, but then, when you look at the details of the changelings that we’ve been given (no headcanons, just what we’ve seen in the show) then Thorax’s brother refusing to change is potentially dangerous.
Blacklings live in constant, unsatisfyable hunger, and it got so bad for Thorax that his body acted aganst the will of his mind to try and attack flurry heart when it reached a certain point. If Thorax’s brother doesn’t change, then who’s to say he won’t end up hurting someone. That or accept that he needs to steal love from others in order to feed a hunger that will never be fully quenched for him.

While it would not surprise me at all to learn the synopsis is implying things that do not happen within the episode proper, I’m afraid I have to agree with @gingerninja666 on this one. It is entirely possible to see the visual part of the change as a somewhat unsatisfactory wrinkle in the premise, but appearance is ultimately kind of a trivial point in the larger story. The real issue is that Thorax’s brother is choosing a path that is to his detriment, one that leaves him a slave to never-ending, gnawing hunger, and may well cause him to attack others to get his “fix”. And with that in mind, the episode premise seems much less a hypocritical tale about forcing conformity on a free spirit, and more about trying to help someone who stubbornly refuses to change harmful, self destructive behavior.
That may even be why Starlight and Trixie are the ones going. They both know a thing or two about the support of friends and the need to end behavior that causes harm to oneself and others.
