NO! THE NAMES HAVE TO BE LOGICAL AT LEAST…

Disappointed to see so many people vote for having the last name be “shy”. Ponies don’t have marriage names, this is pushing a weird cultural thing from the real world onto the ponies. Imagine if we were asked to name Flurry Heart’s parents and came up with Shining Heart and Candy Heart… Oh wait those aren’t half bad names. It’s still not the pony way though.
 
If both Mr and Mrs shy end up with shy in their names, and it’s implied they had those names before marriage, I guess that works okay. Kinda like Mr and Mrs cake. (Cupcake changed her name because she found her talent and not because of marriage if I read into her explanation right.)

I agree with you. It would be nice if the pony culture was different, where they don’t do family names like we do. They simply have one or two first names.
 
But sadly, even if they would try to avoid it, some writers will still insert it in one way or another, anyway. Such as saying “Ms. Sparkle”, which is treating it like a family name when it isn’t one … or even “Mr. Shy”; when “Shy” isn’t even a second name for Fluttershy.

I mean it can still work. Think of it like a courtesy name. Like Mr Night Light Sparkle, father of Twilight Sparkle.

Could just as easily be a cultural thing to refer to parents by the names of their children, like the Arabic kunya. Twilight’s family all have some connection to light in their names, though– even Shining Armor– so if they do have a “family name” or clan name it wouls probably be Light.

Turns out her birth name was Beatrix Potter but she changed it to Trixie Lulamoon for a stage name because she’s just not that into rabbits.
