IDW Thread (Spoilers)

I like all the comics even if they have flaws, I guess I also read them to enjoy the art. Though Tirek comic I was exspecting more and felt wayyy to short!

Well, I finished reading Fiendship #3 on /mlp/
 
You know, I’ve said several times how and why I quit buying the comics, but I’ve also said I keep reading the online scans hoping to see something that could make me want to start buying the comic again.
 
Having said that, the Sirens’ comic (with 2 “s”s) was a painful read so I’m still not buying anything.

I agree with you. Why did Anderson try to solve a small (assumed) plot-hole by creating an even bigger one? I can’t read it without shaking my head over that detail. It just brings up more questions than answers. There are other problems with the comic, but that one sticks out the most to me.
 
Things like this is why I wouldn’t mind if the comics turned out to be completely non-canon to the show. There are some gems here and there, but stinkers like this and the Cattle Rustlers arc aren’t worth accepting the whole thing as canon.

There was no plothole. I’ve never heard anyone complain about it before this came up. What a mess. It’s not even worth another sentence describing its many problems, it is that much of a mess.

Wow the only finished quality comic was so far with Sombra. Tirek was lacking with story development while Sirens are just plain boring and entire storyline didn’t make any sense. Out of Whitley-Rice-Anderson he is the worst and it is he who want to work on Season 6?

Yes. Personally I liked the Tirek comic the best and it would have been a great two parter. The even weirder thing is that he was the writing staff’s last choice given to their least experienced writer.
 
And about S6: the fact that he expects them to talk to him about this rather than the opposite shows he has no clue how it works. I’m pretty sure at this point he relishes the fact nothing he can do will get him not asked back for more at IDW. His writing got much worse after it became clear they’ll defend anything and everything he says and does.

I think his comment about wanting to write for FiM was an April’s joke.
 
And this comic introduced yet another version of Starswirl which makes me think the IDW comic writing staff is taking indeed the 90’s Archie Sonic route, aka each one trying to do their own thing rather than working together as a coordinated team.

And that’s what worries me the most about the comic’s writers. The possible fact that none of them are working together to create some sort of continuity to their stories while still making their own story style.

But Ted Anderson did take Cook’s Starswirl character. Did you miss all those wacky comedy scenes with him? Add to the fact that Cook’s Starswirl was way older than Anderson’s and probbaly more senile and childish.

serious, those Starswirls are not very different. And since he was never present in FiM it’s hard to call them OOC

I remember Luna in one of the main comics saying that Starswirl tended to act like Pinkie Pie more than Twilight.

The only difference between Starswirl depictions is between IDW and Amy Keating Rogers who wrote him as a serious and wise pony in the Journal. On the other hand Luna was more of a collected Pinkie Pie

I’ve been looking at the reactions over the Sirens’ comic in another site, and some of the people there are saying that the sirens didn’t come off as villainous enough in the comic.
 
Does anyone agree or disagree with that?

There wasn’t much attempt to show them seriously causing discord, which could make it look like that. It makes Starswirl look even worse.

I don’t understand how this comic could have been such a trainwreck when it was made and approved under supervision of the cartoon’s staff itself.

You do have a point. Due to the way the sirens are portrayed in this comic, it makes Star Swirl look like a jerk. I know the show itself said that “he did not understand friendship”, but this is ridiculous.

They most likely have no idea how the Equestria Girls timeline work. They hardly keep continuity with their own tv show. They just approved it to fit the story told in Rainbow Rocks. It’s a shame they made Starswirl decision so petty. Well it’s not like they would ever tell the story of the Sirens in any movie or tv show. So that’s what we will ever get about Dazzlings.

Yes, but when the comic staff receives direct input and guidance from the cartoon’s staff one can’t help but expect something unique.

Frankly I’m more annoyed that the “hero’s” keep dumping their problems on other people.

Personally, my complaint is that the Sirens comic was overly simplistic. The Sombra and Tirek ones gave a lot of detail about what things were like before their rise to power. Their life, their family, their home, lots of stuff about who they are. This one… well did we really learn any more about the Sirens as characters than we already knew going into it? I don’t think we did.
 
In the end, it just sorta lengthened the exposition that Twilight already gave in the movie: Sirens exist, they cause trouble with their music, Starswirl banishes them, the end.

Yeah, all I can get from their comic was that they entered a music competition to cause some minor chaos with simple arguing, Starswirl got schooled in music, and he sent the Sirens to another dimension cause he was a sore loser.

Whenever I see Ted’s last name on the Sirens issue, I was expecting a bad and disappointing story.
 
I was right.

What I don’t get is that, given how the comics frequently make pop culture references and ponifications (the show does that too, but the comics seem to do it a lot more often), they didn’t make the obvious reference and have the judges resemble pony versions of Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul, and Randy Jackson.
 
But yeah, from what little I’ve seen of it through scans on this site, I think this one’s going to go on my “Issues to Skip Whenever the Hell I Finally Get a Chance to Binge on Every Issue of All Three Comic Lines” (I consider the Fiendship is Magic thing to be more of a mini-series than a full comic line like the main comics, the Micro Series, and the Friends Forever stories) list. I’m getting kind of a “meh” vibe from it.
 
And I’m going to leave before I unintentionally piss someone off again.
