In the EqG world, the Changelings are not a separate species, but a ninja clan specializing in disguise and infiltration. They are expert impersonators and vocal mimics, as well as skilled with costumes and makeup, so those who leave the Changeling Clan and don’t wind up returning home in chains usually have a bright future in showbiz.

Discord and Derpy are friends.

There are two primary tribes of Griffon: the Eastern Griffon tribe and the Western Griffon tribe. Gilda is from the Western Griffon tribe, which is made up of the Pelican, Eagle and Vulture clans. The Eastern Griffon tribe, meanwhile, is made up of the Osprey, Hawk and Falcon clans. While the Western Griffon Kingdom collapsed generations ago, the Eastern Griffon Kingdom still stands.
 
There are other differences, too. Western Griffons have a culture similar to that of earth societies of the Pontic-Caspian steppe; Eastern Griffons have one that’s similar to the Indo-Iranian cultures of South and Central Asia. Like their Western brethren, Eastern Griffons are avaricious and acquisitive, but are also more aggressive and warlike (they view land as a commodity, but one that can only be acquired through conquest), whereas Western Griffons preferred to increase their wealth through commerce and trade.
 
While Western Griffon Kings ruled through respect, Eastern Griffon Kings rule through the use of repression. Neither group of Griffons is fond of each other: Western Griffons view Eastern Griffons as borderline insane and tyrannical, while Eastern Griffons perceive Western Griffons as weak-willed and shiftless.

There are also a scattered few tribeless griffons, many of whom are migratory. It is to these outsiders that Hippogriffs are most often born, and those griffons who consider themselves artists tend to be among their number. It’s not uncommon for one of them to find their place with another race altogether; often, that race would be ponies, but this is far from universal, and stray griffons have found their homes among such disparate breeds as zebras, minotaurs, and Diamond Dogs (the pursuit of gems naturally appealing to the greed in a Griffin’s heart), and there have even been a few scattered rumors of some being taken in by dragons, as unlikely as that seems.

The crazy yet awesome theory offered by Tommy Oliver/Brony Curious makes for a very interesting headcanon, found here (theory starts near the 28 minute mark).
 
Comparing MLP:FiM with LotR by weaving an interesting idea involving Princess Luna, Nightmare Moon, and Queen Chrysalis. Yet, while it is a pretty awesome theory that can make sense… loyal fans of our beloved princess of the night will not be so keen on the headcanon. Because it creates a parallel between Princess Luna/Nightmare Moon to Melkor/Morgoth of the The Silmarillion.

I was originally thinking that Pip was a fan of AC/DC, but I don’t know what the pony equivalent to that would be (can’t think of a good pun). Then I tried thinking of one for Def Leppard, but couldn’t, and finally settled on Van Haylen.
