Why can't we delete our own comments?

So we all say something stupid that we regret posting sometimes, right? The only quick and easy way to cover that up is to quickly edit your comment, but then people can still check the original.
 
So why can’t we just delete our own comments? It’s such a basic feature that every other modern site that I know of uses!

People would abuse it if we let individual users delete their own comments. Also, you can report your own comment if you felt like it broke a rule. And lastly, you should think over what you’re typing before posting it.

Most other sites are not concerned with keeping a historical record of information, because it’s not relevant to their bottom line. Historical record-keeping is part of what we do, and we do it for every model that users can edit.
