Hi, I don’t really interact here on the forums that much, but I do have a question mostly aimed at the Admins and higher ups of derpibooru. Whats the plan for when FiM/G4 ends?

Looking For My Doctor
If there’s characters who have the same names as previous generations (like, if they have a Twilight Sparkle in G5, too), then we’ll have to figure out how to handle the names so people can search for the generation they want. Same thing for episodes or merchandise that might end up with the same names.

There’s a few ways to do that - the simplest is to just add (G4) Twilight Sparkle tags, like with did with G1, 2, 3, etc.

We’ve pretty much had to do some of this already with things like the My Little Pony Movie, to differentiate the new one from older versions with the same name.

We might add a “G4” tag to all the existing G4 artwork on the site to differentiate it from G5, so that people can search for “(G5 thing), -G4” and avoid anything from the FiM generation in their search for stuff from the new generation … not sure.

That’s a ways out though, so I’m sure by the time G5 hits the air we’ll have a plan worked out for supporting the new generation.

That DOES happen. I’m all for fandoms and fansites going on forever, but they don’t have that kind of stamina. People move on, jokes get old, suddenly youkre thinking all that cash and time spent on running the site could feed the kids or buy you a better home…
Bronies are usually the coolest people in dealing with stuff like this, too, but pulling a Bronycon and saying “wekre pulling the plug at this-and-this point” wouldn’t sound unfair
I’m sure y’all will figure out the coolest send-off if it ever comes to that tho : )

Nah, we have no plans to.

Derpibooru is funded entirely by Patreon and some cheap, fixed-rate advertising. The thing about our site is that we can scale our expenses with demand. Derpibooru’s opperating expenses are currently fairly high because we have like 75,000 unique daily visitors and 1M+ unique monthly visitors, so we need a powerful server to cope with that traffic. If traffic to the site decreases (and thus Patreon support and ad revenue with it), we could do with a smaller server.

BronyCon doesn’t have that luxury - they have contracts binding them to a very expensive convention center that is way larger than their attendance requires. While they won’t come out and say it, I believe they’re shutting down for purely financial reasons. As a non-profit, they are subject to certain disclosure laws, so here is their financial condition as of September 30th, 2016 - if you just read the first page, it basically states that BronyCon had a net loss of nearly $60,000 USD after the 2015 fiscal year (which ended September 30th, 2016), and had $216,000 worth of assets.

Basically put, their cons are loosing money, and since attendance keeps decreasing, I suspect they just finally ran out and had to pull the plug.
