I agree with you, but an alias involving a tag that huge would definitely require permission from the devs. I’ll ask them about it, but considering it would be 3->65539, my guess is it’ll probably just be easier to manually retag them and destroy “female solo” instead. I’ll see what they say.

Well, the official and full title of the 1986 film is My Little Pony: The Movie. So those five words in that order should refer to the old film. I’m not sure what we should tag images of the upcoming film as.

There has been some promo stuff for the upcoming movie using the same words and order, even the concept slides shown at the Russian convention the other day started with one saying it, but the rest also had the words “friendship adventure” on it, but that was also used to show merchandise so it might me a line name.

I think, for now, “My Little Pony movie” should be the 2017 film (and we can alias it with its correct title once we know the final title), and My Little Pony: The Movie (with the “the” and also the colon) should refer to the 1986 film. My Little Pony the movie (without the colon) should be an alias of the one with the colon. And then maybe add a note in “detailed information” explaining the difference between the similar and potentially confusing tags. That way, when people want to search for one specific film over the other, they won’t get mixed results.
 
If there are any other tags that potentially refer to the 2017 film, anyone can bring it/them to our attention now.

Why don’t we just call it “the upcoming MLP movie” or “the 2017 MLP movie”? It’s just a placeholder until we know the actual title, so it doesn’t really matter if the tag’s a bit weird…

Looking through the tags (my little pony movie is entirely the new one, my little pony: the movie is entirely the old one, and my little pony the movie is a mixture), I’ve noticed that the biggest difference between the titles of the two movies is the presence of “Friendship is Magic” in the latter.

Alright, I’ve cleaned out the movie-related tags:  
my little pony: the movie contains only images relating to the 1986 movie,  
my little pony movie contains only images relating to the 2017 movie, and  
my little pony the movie is now empty.
 
I suggest that my little pony movie be renamed to friendship is magic: the movie and we put this whole business behind us; at least until and unless the 2017 movie gets a proper title.  
(This would also necessitate renaming spoiler:my little pony movie to spoiler:friendship is magic: the movie)

For those wondering why aliasing big tags takes so damn long and why we’re so reluctant to do it, here’s why.
 
The index on every image in the union of the two tag “sets” has to be manually updated in the search engine. This isn’t that slow; Elasticsearch can index about 5000 documents per second before the indexing throughput becomes noticeable in search. But we never get to that level.
 
The problem here is incredibly inefficient processing of the images that are being built to be sent off. This might take 50-200ms per image. Since one worker executes alias rebuilds at a time, at a best case scenario, that’s 50 seconds for 1000 images. Worst case, 200 seconds.
 
The obvious, quick-n’-dirty solution is to just add more workers and process the jobs in parallel. This doesn’t work like you expect; the server might have around 64GB of uncommitted RAM but it has to serve your requests too, and having its CPU cycles being stolen by alias rebuild jobs is not what we want to see happen. Especially with some annoying guy trying to DDoS us appside lately.
 
The correct and more scalable solution is to rewrite the system to process images in a bulk format and build a temporary identity map containing tag and user names while aliasing. This will prevent excessive database requests (the costliest part of indexing) and vastly speed up alias jobs.

Because “Science Twilight” was already aliased into “Human Twilight”, so it didn’t make sense for “Sci-Twi” to not be aliased.
 
I don’t know who did the original alias, but I imagine they had good reason to.

That’s kinda cool to know how things work server-side. I know this is an odd question, but do you guys think by backing up/copying the current database (not sure of all the terminology, just guessing) to a half-decent computer (using patreon funds, or maybe ask for an old server as a donation?), wouldn’t that make things easier on the system, the throughput, and decrease the downtime exponentially server-side? Also, is there any particular time in the day/week that the traffic is close to none that you could implement the changes?
