I have a compromise re: no more downvoting from thumbnails:

Well, I’ll throw in my vote with either ‘no votes from thumbnail’ or ‘both votes from thumbnail’.
 
I dunno. It seems to me, personally, that I can almost always tell what I want to upvote or downvote from the thumbnail. It might not look like that to the admins, though: stuff I want to downvote would just get downvoted from the thumbnail, but stuff I want to upvote, I also probably want to examine in detail, or look at the source or description, check comments, make comments, etc. So it would look like downvotes are disproportionately decided by thumbnail, when that’s not actually the case–both votes are decided on the thumbnail, it’s just stuff that gets an upvote also draws me to click through.

As Clover already pointed out, we’ll be playing around with this in the coming time.
 
One thing that’s always had me flabbergasted is that there was a downvote button on things that were spoilered. Personally (and I’m sure the legit people out there are too) I use spoilers as a way to not completely hide content I usually dislike, but get a fair warning before I open the image. I mouseover for the rest of the tags, and decide whether to open it or not.
 
Some people though, are spoilering tags they should be filtering, and using them as indicators for “shit I’ll downvote without ever looking at it”.*
 
One other thing that, if it were up to me alone (but I’m putting it out here so that people can give input on it), has irked me for a while now is the yellow background of spoilered images. For ages now, I’ve been overriding that to look like the other, both because it makes the text more readable, as well as it being clear from the now ever-present black bar that something is a spoilered image. The yellow thing screams for attention.
 
*= if you have something spoilered downvoted, the undownvote button will appear, but when you click it, it will disappear completely again. ie, you can remove your downvote, but not add a downvote, from things you spoiler from thumbs.

I thought it was odd to be able to vote on spoilered images, but I personally rarely vote from the thumbnail to start with. Some images I’ve seen looked great from the thumbnail, but as nice up close.
 
Most of the junk you can see a mile away, but it feels petty to downvote from the thumbnail, because as far as I can tell there is no way to have a score in the filter system. Any such default score would definitely be ripe for abuse, but then the image score is just a number you need to interpret visually. I’m not reeeeally improving the overall quality of the site in a tangible manner, as even negative scored images are still shown. I can filter “downvotes galore”, but that’s it.
 
While I’m a fan of stable interfaces, I can’t really blame the admins for looking at ‘neigh’ and thinking it’s superfluous. If I could make a filter that said “fluttershy=+50” such a change would have had much farther reaching consequences. Or maybe I can, and I just don’t realize it?

While you can’t filter by score (currently), you can search by it in the advanced search. I sometimes do this to see what’s really popular that I might have missed.

On my alt account I’ve been using a Minumum Score of -4 since forever. Basically hidden tags keep out the worst of the stuff, and I let score filtering do the rest (untagged shitty memes etc)  
It is incidentally the reason people need to lern2hide because for some artists I have to disable that threshold (read: I browse them from this account) because for some reason they attract downvotes for absolutely no reason. Like “ohey it’s this artist I have spoilered INSTANT DOWNVOTE”. Comments are also literally divided between “ogod not this shit again” and people that actually like the art, that one little detail, etc.

Well yeah, I knew about that. I was talking about complex filtering, since that’s what it looked like huebris was trying to suggest.  
Man, we need complex filters.

Yes I was talking about complex filtering, for those situations where I’d want the score to dictate different actions. I normally filter ‘meme’ but what if everyone thought it was hilarious? That sort of thing.
