I can see perhaps showing a checkbox/confirmation of age before allowing “explict” and “questionable” content to be shown, but otherwise I couldn’t disagree with this more. If you choose to browse using the “everything” filter, that means you will see literally everything, not “almost everything, but we’ll still hide some stuff we think will be objectionable”.

I wouldn’t mind a similar confirmation box telling the shitheads that if you unfilter everything, you forfeit any rights to complain about seeing shit you don’t want to see, don’t go bitching on stuff you could have filtered. But in a polite way of course.

I really don’t want to have to click through a spoiler tag for images I want to see if I don’t have them explicitly filtered. Either spoiler it yourself or grow up and ignore it.

This is really the issue I was trying to cover. Also to mitigate downvote-bombing because “I don’t liek thing”. I like the idea of it maybe having a heavier hand toward those who check that box and still complain afterward, getting a ban sooner than other offenders.

I’m one of those people who don’t spoiler much (and hide none), and I still think there needs to be some kind of measure for those images that cater to the outliers. I’m also one of those people who vote almost solely based on the quality (and sometimes the comedy, because there’s no way to differentiate through voting) rather than the subject, i.e., I don’t vote with my benis or because of some “ick factor”.

How about an option to receive email notifications when you receive a new PM?
 
Just something a lot of sites offer, and it could be quite handy for conversations.

Emails on some events are a thing I’ve been considering adding for a while - not for stuff like comment reply notifications, probably, but stuff like PMs for sure. We’d want to have email verification in place and required for enabling those features, which is a bit of extra work. It’s low down the priority list.

I feel like there should be a “User Reputation” system implemented. Where you would go to the players profile or it could be next to comments they post and a button would be there where you could give them +1 reputation. For example: I needed help regarding a blurred area on how criticism worked on this site and a friendly mod helped clear it up for me with a few quick and polite responses so I’d give him +1 reputation for being so helpful and friendly. It could help in a lot of other situations as well; Like being able to tell who are trust worthy users on the site and who aren’t, along with a lot of other useful advantages. It would also help the community come together in a lot of ways.

Would that be like letting people vote on each other’s accounts? O.o I get the feeling that would cause drama… Also what would prevent people from creating accounts to artificially inflate their main account’s reputation score?

A lot of forums have a reputation system so I would think it would be handled in that same manner. No drama, it would be solely the persons business who is wishing to give them a one up in reputation. As for preventing people from creating accounts to inflate their own reputation, there are quite a few ways to stop that I would imagine. The best example I could give is the GUNetwork’s reputation system.

I somewhat doubt people will take it that way. Once people start comparing reputation scores, there will inevitably be arguments over whether people deserve the scores they get.

Care to elaborate? I don’t know what GUNetwork is, nor how their reputation system works.

Yeah, no, doesn’t really sound like a very good idea. Like, I can appreciate the sentiment of wanting to give people positive reinforcement but there’s no way that wouldn’t turn into a dick-measuring contest.

If you really want to thank someone, just PM them — a simple “thank you” note, coming from an actual person, feels much better than an artificial number.

I would rather the person who is backing this feature suggestion explain key aspects of how they think it should be implemented. Especially when those key parts address fundamental flaws in the feature request in question.
 
And considering you seem to be very familiar with the site, it seems like you’re in a much better spot than I am to be explaining the nuances.
 
But if you want me to go out and do research, then at some point I’ll get around to it. Eventually. _{(Researching a complex system on a site I have no experience with doesn’t really land too far up on my list of priorities.)}

Anonymous voting on the quality of things is bad and you should feel bad. I’m not too happy we have it on images, I really hope we don’t put it on anything else.
 
The problem is it leads to “circlejerking”, where the majority opinion consists of highly upvoted things and the minority opinions consist of highly downvoted things; this makes disagreement more visible, so anger-based concepts propagate more readily, and thus people get permanently polarized.  
tl;dr:let’s not get more like Reddit.

I wish to second this. I get enough circlejerking just from reading the elite: dangerous subreddit. I – or any of us – don’t need it here as well.

On the bottom of the site’s front page, where it shows the latest images under your watch list, could there be a link to view all watched imaged?

Based on this response by ZippySqrl, it seems like the question of whether users can change their usernames has been asked multiple times. Would it be worth it to add in an entry to the site’s FAQ about that? Or create a pinned thread in the Site and Policy Forum for FAQs like that?

There already is such a button. The little eye in the bar that sepsrates your watched images from the rest of the front page.

Detect image type at upload (and possibly retroactively?) by reading file header instead of trusting image extension.
 
I have found a lot of .PNG images that are really jpeg images.  
Many from tumblr source?  
I doubt uploaders even realize that the files are not real PNG by the comments I got when pointing it out.
 
You can open a picture in notepad and it says JFIF for jpg in the first row and PNG for well, PNG.  
Web browsers don’t care and work ether way as they go by the above information and not file extension, but I care.

I at one point intended to deal with the FAQ for this very reason, but the page requires restructuring and rewriting entirely, so it’ll have to wait.

I think new uploads actually do check beyond just the file extension, but old uploads are stuck with what the old site code found.  
Would be nice if people would actually stop putting .png on JPEGs, or for that matter, not making JPEGs, though.

Dunno about you or anyone else, but I think I’d prefer an almost unnoticeable quality decrease over a 10MB filesize for stuff like SFM images and photos.
