Update: interesting/random discovery/note: the background pony created for the “preview post” is not the same as the BGP that actually appears when posting.
 
Also, I seem to get the same BGP in the post preview no matter the thread/picture. Interesting…
 
Research log update 1: I have recorded the BGP in question.  
 
I am curious as to whether I will have the same pony appear in post/comment previews when I have “post anonymously” marked when I’m on different sessions and/or networks. Is said pony attached to my history, session, network, or account?
 
Why do I care? Because I’m a freaking scientist and I’m curious about everything. I mean, what the heck. I think this answers the “engineer or scientist” question I’ve been having for years.

Yep, that’s Limey Daze - she’s the default-default avatar. The system generates the avatars using the displayed name (either your username or background pony ID) as a seed. If the system does not pass on any name to the OC generator at all though, Limey is what it outputs by default.
 
So in essence, she’s the most default avatar on the site right now, since the OC generator is the “default avatar”, and she’s the “default” of the generator.
 
As for why she appears on the preview screen - if you notice the preview just says “background pony” as a name, without a background pony idea. It doesn’t calculate the ID at that point, so it has nothing to pass on to the OC generator, so it gets Limey Daze in return.
 
Fixing that would require modifying how the previews are generated, and to be quite honest, I kinda like her. She’s like a little easter egg now :)

In your face, Rarity. She’s got green hair and it’s cute and creative! It’s a hard color to pull off well, but if you do, it’s really nice.
 
Also thanks for all the explanation. That’s really neat. I really need to know code stuff better. I’m even sitting in on a team writing some physics simulation code. Physics involves a lot of coding, so I’ll pick it all up pretty soon…

Would it be possible to create an option to disable the “uploads previews”? I like them but sometimes when I want to upload a large file, my PC freezes…

How long have avatars been able to be animated GIFs?

Is it possible to disable animated gif avatars in user settings, either freezing them after one cycle or in the first frame? Asking as someone with neurological issues.

The easiest way I know is to use a generic content blocker and use it to hide the element derpibooru.org###js-image-upload-preview. I’ve used that trick a few times to do exactly what you want: prevent too large image from crashing the browser during uploading.

disable animated gif avatars  
Right click on them and you can add any that wreck your brainmeats to the block list in Adblock Plus or uBlock. I have to do that for avatars on some sites because they’re much too flashy.

Ooo thanks for the tip, I won’t trust Adblock Plus again but no doubt there’s another dozen add-ons that can do that.

uBlock Origin is the standard suggestion for anyone moving away from ABP; I use ’em both because ABP filters are easier to manage. There are also several add-ons for Firefox/Chrome that will either kill any animated GIFs or present them as still images.

If you’re on Chrome, this has a setting to not loop animations.

Would it be practical for the new Favouriters button to show how many favorites on the button?

Did the notifications thing just update in real time, or was it just me?

I noticed it do that too
