Downvoting/hiding feedback

Background Pony Number 17
My Little Pony - 1992 Edition

Oh, and you can put me down for #3. Although I’d suggest instead of a “hide” button, make it a “Spoiler” button. And if enough people downvote, maybe make the Spoiler tag apply for everyone to let folks know there’s a real stinker here?

I’m not sure how useful a “reasons” selection or info box would be. We had tossed that idea around ourselves. But the thought came people would just select whatever first option there was for filtering without paying attention to what it said, or just type random gibberish as a reason.

Yes, but having to provide a reason is enough to make some people stop and consider exactly why they’re downvoting, ESPECIALLY when it’s multiple-choice and each choice has a clear description. Overwatch’s new report system is a pretty good example:

This. Then let users filter based on percentage. Maybe it doesn’t filter until either a set amount of time has passed or a certain number of votes have been cast.

Also, definitely keep the Hide feature. I maintain a pretty robust set of filters, but every now and then something slips through, and it falls into a grey area that tags won’t cover.

I don’t like the idea of relative scores because I want to directly compare my work to other artists’ art.

Just spotted this going back over it

Actualluy I would think taht relative scores would be preferable in that case. It would allow me to compare the ‘appeal’ people find in my work directly against that of an artist such as PonykillerX because no matter how many total votes we each get, the percentage would be represenative.

Additionally i suggested that up and downvotes be counted cumulatively as a total (as in 10+10 = 20, not 10-10=0), allowing you to compare the exposure itself as a seperate statistic.

Example: “712 votes, 92% positive”; if you really want you can derive the totals from that, but that 8% down becomes a functional and informative statistic on hwo your work appeals to the site’s userbase.

If you look at a piece by me and see 7 downvotes, how do you then copare that to the total downvotes on a much better known artist? To me that would be a fool’s errand unless you used it to calculate percentage anyway.

I prefer, in order of greatest to least preference:
  1. Revert + Add Hide Button as first choice - Downvotes give info. Some people abuse it, yes, but its taking away a feature because of jerks. I hate yielding to jerks.

  2. Allow ‘Show hidden’ and allow us to filter with this in some way, like ‘More hides than upvotes’ or ‘Net Upvotes - hides’ or something of the sort.

  3. Reddit-Style - Helpful, but now its hard to know if an image with a score of say 50 is because it has tons of activity and is controversial, or is just low on the number of voters count.

    But I’d strongly prefer revert.

I vote for option 2, but the user has an option to see how many downvotes an image has or not, per image. Basically what Binkyt11 said.

Neither option 1 or option 3 will prevent “double-voting” by upvoting one image and downvoting every other image. Plus, I will never use the hide tool if option 3 becomes a thing.

Master of Downvote
Option 3 seems good
Option 1 also

And this is just my opinion, how about if we really don’t want people to abuse the Downvote > the moment they clicked downvote, they should also include a feedback/comment to the image, after that, the downvote will count. If they didn’t comment, the downvote will not count :)

Idk, just my humble opinion, I’ll be crawling back to my cave..
Background Pony #E681
I just logged in and found this update, seems to help out somewhat.
The thing here is that some ponies may like to still hide or spoiler a tag I myself have used the system to move around the tag or flag an image when I am clearing my faves.
This may not be what you intend but the new system may be used to lower the number of images on may watch list by Hiding a image but not a set tag.
What if the site pops up a box where you can flag why your hiding the image and have the up loader learn from it.
So User 1 likes bondage but not blood on the other hoof User 2 may like blood but not bondage.
I myself like bondage but not when it’s being done to a male, unless it’s cross dressing that is.

I doubt all several hundred thousand users will chime in or vote, though. I mean take all the time you guys need to evaluate what the community wants. Put up a poll for us to vote on or something.

@Marx

My point was that the majority were against it. I suppose I should’ve taken the time to see how many actually were in favor, instead of just saying “very few”. That’s on me, I’ll admit that. But my actual point was that more people were against rather than in favor.

Revert. I was going to suggest a number of other options, but thinking over it, this is the best way to enable users to control both their own experience and which type of input they provide to artists and other users. Sometimes a user has a negative opinion on a picture but doesn’t want to render it invisible. Sometimes they have a negative opinion and don’t want to see the image again. And sometimes the image just isn’t to their taste so they’d rather avoid seeing it, but they don’t think it’s poorly made or displays bad subject matter in general.

I don’t think we should obstruct people from carrying their intentions out in any of these situations. And being able to observe the upvote/downvote ratio as well as the total score is too informative to get rid of for those who care, even if not everyone is making use of it.
davnov

I like option 3 the most, but I’d like to say my piece against option 1 (reddit-style) as well. Artists who draw controversial art already know they’re going to get downvotes. For them, the amount of upvotes is all that they have to gauge how much their fans like the art. Reddit style would completely obscure this statistic to them.

I somewhat am on that line. Bring back down votes but curtail the anonymity. I mean, it already shows everyone what your faves are and that could be telling on you anyway, so I don’t totally get the objection if the pendulum swings the other way. Surely we are rational enough people to be forthright about why? Then again maybe I’m having a moment of too much faith in people again.

Auto hiding something you downvoted is good, this is something I wanted.

I don’t know if completely removing downvotes from scoring is a good thing though. One thing I can say is that this change might make the minimum/maximum score filter option significantly less useful. If I had ever used that, I know it would’ve been to specifically filter things that had really low negative scores.

I’d personally like the downvotes back, but make the expicit amount on a pic less visible. Keep the hide button as well.

I vote for option #2: “Showing hide counts”.

I would like to know if the number of hidden images could be queried. This way, people can use it in their searchs/‘complex filters’, but it will be their prerogative to do so, not a default.

Again, I say that this makes Derpibooru less of a safe space, as a majority can’t negatively impact small groups that enjoy things disliked by the majority. Some people suggested upvote and downvote are equally arbitrary, and any argument for removing one is an argument for removing the other. I disagree. Derpibooru is making harder for people to break/breach into a group you are not represented and affect it negatively. If you have an opposite view, now you can upload material that represents your own views, or find such content and upvote it. Opposite views now are able to live together with each other, instead the view presented by the majority crushing the view of a minority.

I was actually going to come here and suggest something of this sort, where those who downvote have to provide a reason. I suggest also having several ‘false’ reasons, such as not liking the theme, or the fetish or w/e that hides it without affecting the score. Then default to one of these false reasons.
