Downvoting is being replaced by Hiding

Likes good dialogue.
Just a site note: downvotes are useful for finding controversial images.
If an image has a low score, low upvotes, low downvotes – then it is simply boring.
If an image has a low score BUT lots of up- and downvotes in similar quantity – then it is controversial.
The only flaw in removing downvotes is no-more-searches-for-curious-people-who-want-to-know-what-causes-controversy-or-the-general-public-hates. People don’t exclusively search looking for good images.

I’ll miss it for stats (looking for the top bottom 10 for characters for example). I was also somewhat curious if the upvotes would continue to overpower the downvotes when I got to a certain page of a comic I’m posting that has a gory image on it.

Who the heck searches for pictures of /mlpol/ or a ponified Trump instead of just debating the alt-right and/or Donald Trump in the political forums?
I mean, i get why people dislike these posts, but why would they search for them?

Also, if you already have a tag spoilered, you cannot directly click on the hide icon from the thumbnail of an image with that spoilered tag.

I think it would be nice to know how many hides an image has gotten, but only the one who posted it would know.

If I like (or neutral) most artist’s art and don’t like only few pieces, why should I hide ALL artist’s art?

99% of bronies i know who oppose (or at least dislike) mixing ponies with a certain ideology tend to avoid such posts.

I hope my friends don’t get mad at me for disagreeing with them, but I think removing downvotes is a mistake. Downvotes could be a good tool for artists to improve. And yeah, I understand people spamming the downvote button. That’s a problem. However, maybe you could just ban the users that keep spamming the downvote button instead of just removing the downvote button entirely.

Well… i’m afraid your demands are too complicated to be formed into a site mechanic.

Maybe remove the upvote and ask people to write comments so they can rate art … you can also give a star system or rating from 1 to 5 but do not delete downvote if you do not remove upvote … it’s as if you could not answer the question “ No “without arguments, but maybe you miss it if you say yes … COMPLETELY WITHOUT SENSE!

If a tool allows the original poster to see how many hides an image receives it can still help an artist improve. c:

Well, I’m all for this, particularly because of reason #4. “Fake” downvoting does nothing for the community, as it tells us nothing and does nothing to help us find the kinds of images we want to look at, which as far as I can tell is a good portion of the point of this site. On a certain other pony site, I’m used to waiting an hour or so after I post something for the first 2-3 expected ‘I don’t know what this is but I don’t like it’ downvoters to get it out of their system before I can really get a handle on actual opinions, be they good or ill. For the record, I don’t downvote. If I don’t like something I just stop looking at it and ignore it. When you create a piece of art, write a story, or anything like that, you’re putting yourself out there, and a ‘downvote’ without any sort of context can be both hurtful and confusing. And I’m willing to accept that what I think is ‘bad’ still might have an artist behind it who’s doing their best to create something nice.
If I’m not willing to straight up comment on the image and say what I don’t like about it in a constructive way, than I don’t think I have any business ‘voting’ on it.
EDIT: I appreciate the irony that I commented on this right after the artist who drew my profile pic XD

We do ban them, but that doesn’t stop more people from ban evading and continuing to do so.

Except that 1-star ratings could be interpreted as a downvote of sorts.

Will there be any way to like…for lack of a better way of putting it, add in some kind of filter that worked like the old ‘Don’t show posts with a negative ratio’ filter?
Because I did like that one - it was helpful because almost all stuff that hit negative ratios was stuff I had 0 interest in seeing anyways. Now I can’t think of a way to do so. It’s not a tag block, because I’m trying to avoid low quality stuff I dislike in tags I do like.
I mean ultimately it’s not a huge huge burden to click ‘Hide’ every so often.
But I feel I’m losing two useful functions:

But I feel I’m losing two useful functions:
- The above filter capacity
- A quick-judge on what other people think about a piece. 400 upvotes 400 downvotes vs 400 upvotes 10 downvotes was useful knowledge. That capacity is gone now, as well, and there’s no real way to see what other users think of a thing beyond how many people like it.
Ultimately - if it’s too much of a moderation headache, I understand that coming first.
But I am not a fan of the change itself, because that removes the ability for me to utilize the collective filtering power of the community to my advantage, so this loses functionality with 0 personal gain.
Anyhoo, thanks for the update on the reasoning - I get why it’s done even if I dislike it. Just registering polite dissent here :)

The gain is that artists won’t be told that not everyone liked their art.
That’s WAYYYYY more important than you not needing to see terrible stuff.
