Not to mention, even the most useless of degrees like philosophy will still look better on a CV than just having a blank space after secondary education. Unless you plan on learning a trade, it’s always worth your while to get a degree in something.

Over here, you basically have two options when it comes to getting a degree.

Option one: you get a specialised degree in engineering, science or whatever. This runs the risk of finding yourself in an oversaturated job market, but if you can get a job with that degree, you’re basically riding the money train. Given that I’m the sort of person whose eyes glaze over when it comes to advanced maths, that was never going to be an option for me.

Option two: you get a degree in one of the “lesser” subjects, like arts or humanities. You won’t be getting any six-figure salaries with it, but the idea is that it will show any potential employer that you’ve already demonstrated the discipline and dedication needed to get that degree in the first place. That’s the sort of thing that will impress any employer worth their salt.

Well, STEM is the most useful since you can get the best jobs in those fields. Classical arts (traditional, digital, musical etc) and humanities can also do you some good. The most useless ones are liberal arts and gender studies, which is basically the tumblrina/SJW starter package. Not sure how things work over in Europe, but in the US, when people go for degrees, they usually go for something in STEM, mostly science and technology since it create a wider range of career opportunities.

Why would you take liberal arts? Did you want to lose brain cells? XD Thank god the college I go to welcomes libertarian and conservative ideas just as much as liberal. And there’s no overprivileged whiny babies there to cause trouble.

Wait, no, that’s not fair. Babies are much more behaved than them.

You probably don’t go on tumblr, or at least that side of tumblr, but it’s used.

Also, there is the fact that “Trigger warning” is a thing now, even outside of tumblr, for fetish. And while MAYBE “rape” could be a decent trigger warning, stuff like “gore” “scat” or even “futa” is definitively not. It might be disgusting, but that’s not warranting a trigger warning at all.

But that’s the thing. I’ve never heard ‘triggered’ used as a means of shutting down a conversation at all, except by people either making a joke about something vaguely related to it, or by assholes being assholes.

Person: I didn’t care much for the Black Widow sub-plot in Age of Ultron. Hit a little too close to home for me.
Asshole: lol, u triggered, bro? >:P

I’m not saying that people who used ‘triggered’ the way you described don’t exist. I’m saying that the way you hear some pundits describe it you’d think you couldn’t get away from it, yet you kind of have to really look for it.

In the context of PTSD, “trigger” refers to the traumatic event that started the disorder, not any later reminders of it. There’s rarely a good reason to say “triggered” or “triggering” when talking about your feelings.

Its status as a joke came from being misused by people who don’t suffer from PTSD at all. When this kind of “triggering” is taken seriously, it becomes a political tool to shut down conversations. Treating it as a joke takes away that power.
