This is how I’ve viewed Rainbow since “Sonic Rainboom”. I believe that her mother (or father, or both) being a Wonderbolt seemed logical, Rainbow idolizes the Wonderbolts because her mother was one and sees them as the best of the best. Thus she believes that if she isn’t the best of the best then she’s a disappointment, a loser with a big mouth.

My headcanon is like this, but slightly different… even being second-best isn’t good enough, she feels like if she doesn’t take the gold, nopony will remember her name tomorrow. Which might be even worse.

Psychologically, this doesn’t quite fit right to me. If you are a sports person, being the best is the ‘killer instinct’. It is the intoxicating ‘want’ to dominate competition. It’s an ancient, evolutionary survival mechanism kicking in and driving the creature/person to reach abilities and talents they wouldn’t normally use. It’s more of power, pride and satisfaction. Acting the best is also a ‘challenge’ to others, as well as an intimadatory presence.

If it’s a decision they have no other choice but to do it, it might be part of the story. If the decision contrasts with their personality, then it’s OOC.

That’s also what I love about the show, characters overcoming their flaws. Nobody is perfect, and when a character finds themselves in a situation they can’t overcome, they have to learn it with the help of her friends, or they will find out over time. That’s what makes me excited for Season 5, the endless possibilities of problems to overcome and accomplishments for our heroes to make. I’m too excited. :D

To be honest, I like this look into Rainbow Dash’s psyche.

In fact, I find all of the insecurities of the Mane 6 to be intriguing. Party of One was my favorite episode in Season 1 because it looked at what happens to Pinkie Pie when she thinks her friends abandoned her. I liked Hurricane Fluttershy because it showed that Fluttershy was a sufferer of PTSD, but she overcame it by facing up to her fears. Twilight in Lesson Zero, was amazing at showing how fearful she is at failing an assignment. In her own episodes, Rarity obviously wants to be successful for her career. Applejack’s episodes tend to focus on her family. Finally, the main topic and my favorite, RD’s fear of failure. Sonic Rainboom and TT123 showed how quickly her confidence can diminish when she knows she can’t accomplish something. It makes me wonder what happens when she really fails at something.

That’s one of my hopes for Season 5, I want them to show an episode of Dash failing right in front of her friends and her idols. By the end of the episode, it shows her to learn to handle failure and knows she can always try again (An RD version of Hurricane Fluttershy, if you will). It might not happen, but a guy can dream…

Sorry if this rant was long, just wanted to share my feelings.
