As far as I know, the first actual full-lenght japanese animated movie is “Momotarō: Umi no Shinpei, a WWII propaganda film from 1945. It features small talking animals who depict the Japanese, while the ‘evil’ British are depicted as humans. It seems that Osamu Tezuka watched the movie as a kid, and loved it. The Americans tried to destroy the movie after the war, without success.
It features also a quite brutal fight scene at the end.
She got better!
On Youtube, I remember seeing a black and white Japanese animation from even before Osamu Tezuka. (Whom made Unico BTW) It looked very Max Flessure inspired, but with Japanese stuff in it. I can’t remember the name of it though.
Interesting. In a way also, Japanese animation was inspired by US animation; I’ve heard Osama Tezuka loved Bambi’s big eyes.
It was an old anme’ movie I liked as a kid. Another I liked was Manx Mouse.
I see.
Never saw Unico…
Actually, anime’s been brought over sense Astro Boy, and Speed Racer in the ‘60s. It’s just became more common in the ’80s and ’90s. (Anyone remember “Unico?”)
I think it might have been, but I do agree, yeah, a lot of 80’s cartoon did have Japanese animation, I wonder if that’s why they brought over anime in the 90’s.
Looking at the thing with the pole…I can kinda understand how it’s moving, it’s the cel sliding across. Shady’s also lucky she didn’t break her jaw…
I don’t remember, but compare it to that one G1 Tirek scene and the animation looks quite similar. The ’80s & ‘90s seemed to help popularize Japanese animation, even in shows that weren’t Japanese.
In fact, Inspector Gadget, Heathcliff/Cats & Co., Animaniacs, Tiny Toons, many “Disney Afternoon” shows, and the intro to the Super Mario World cartoon (hence why it looked better/different from the actual show) were all animated in Japan.
Didn’t Toei Animation also work on G1 My Little Pony? I believe they did, and it was while they were working on this anime too:
@warc9
At least there it looks like the barrel flew up into the air once they hit it, though that is unrealistic XD
Oh well, it’s a fantasy cartoon with talking colorful horses, which is unrealistic in itself.
I don’t know, regardless of the flaws, ’80s & ‘90s animation wasn’t all bad. I think the first TMS-animated season of the original TMNT looked pretty good, though TMS is usually quite good with overseas animation.
it is indeed the natural byproduct of having two separate teams handle the background and the foreground animations. that’s why the background looks so pretty and detailed in comparison to the characters; more time spent drawing and less time spent animating and coordinating.
Yep.
G1 didn’t have perfect physics
