Yeah, the problem here is that there is no corresponding tag for just the normal versions. I mean, we have “Twilight Sparkle” and “Dusk Shine”, but “Dusk Shine” implies “Twilight Sparkle”. So if an image has both of those, its ambiguous as to which it’s referring to (this could imply either it just has Dusk, or that it has both Dusk and Twi). So long that ambiguities like that exist we can’t rely on implications to insure that the “male” and “female” tags get properly added in. Which means we can’t really rely on those tags and need other fancy tags like “solo male”/“solo female” to bridge the gap.

Yeah, in the current system, I imagine this would be an issue.

there sorta kinda technically is in the form of r63 character names. Dusk Shine, Rainbow Blitz, Elusive, hell, Applejacks r63 tag is literally “Applejack (male)”
 
but then you’re still left with OCs uncounted for and there’s no way to ever possibly automate that
 
now if you really want a useless solo tag, it’s the “solo futa” tag. unlike “male” and “female”, futa is pretty much always tagged when it needs to be, so “solo, futa” is sufficient.

Ah, I see. And the tag implication mechanism isn’t powerful enough to figure that “rd” -> “female” because there might be “R63”/etc involved… Hmmm it’d really simplify things if each character tag could have appended modifiers like “(male)”, “(female)” kinda like what TSP mentioned, then the “female”/“male” tags could easily just be aliases for “<any character name> (female)”.

You have no idea of how many NSFW pics of guy alone i had to see because people don’t put the freaking “solo male” tag.

it only seems redundant because you don’t care for their descriptions, or how something like male/female plays a huge part in r63, or r34.
 
this is why when you cherry pick examples, it only ends up being a situational instance of tagging redundancy. If you don’t care for how certain tags have a huge role in other areas, you shouldn’t debate whether a tag should exist, or be used in a certain way or not. Where Solo female is used is exactly what that is, if you removed that, you fucked up. You will end up trudging through tons of irrelevant images to what you were trying to find, because in case you didn’t know, Questionable, Suggestive and Explicit is not an all encompassing triumverate of r34 Only, it contains a fuck ton of things..
 
here’s an example. How would you like it if you looked up solo female, but had to look up Solo, Female, Explicit and you ended up finding gore, or grotesque images in your searches? filter those up, right? what if you don’t want that, but you want to find provocative, solo featured females specifically? Well, guess what? That’s what Solo female is up there for, so you don’t have to even run into the problem of having to filter things because you couldn’t find what you were looking for in the first place.

‘female’ and ‘male’ as tags are not formally used and people just add them randomly for no reason, they don’t accomplish anything and are not on enough images to count for much. Also, solo female and solo male are used widely by filters and watch lists for nsfw related images, though the former is often missed on such images due to lazyness.  
Also, if we DID change it, for whatever reason, it wouldn’t make people tag it any better when they should, and then the 70%+ of safe images would need to be retagged, and if barely anyone can tag the NON safe images already, that would never happen.  
People just add a lot of arbitrary tags to safe images for no reason sometimes as they came from DA or Tumblr and only know how to tag on there.

Makes me wonder why you guys still use that tag to refer to non-safe images at all. I mean, why not just make it a tag for exactly what it sounds like? (And exactly what most people assume it’s used for?) Solo female = image with just a single female in it.
 
And if people want to find images that solo female and not safe, search “solo female, -safe”.
 
That way mods wouldn’t have to waste time reminding everyone about this weird idiosyncrasy in the tagging system.
