Petirep’s artwork really takes a leap during the year that followed. He’s since gone back and redone earlier covers, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he redoes this one, too.

The obvious doll is the not the reference. Petirep’s album covers and video loops for the Monstercat label are known for easter eggs. The actual MLP reference is in the center, under the tree, and behind the foremost gift box. You will want to view the full resolution to see it. It’s clearly a pony and a nod to the artist’s association with the fandom.
