It’s not just Sonic, but others like Batman, TMNT, Superman, and many others have many alternate canons, storylines, and universes. So it’s really nothing unusual for comics, and other media.

I think you’re probably right. And the Sonic continuities are a good comparison. There are somewhere between like 4 and 20 different “canon” stories in the Sonic universe.
I don’t know if the show has had too many major internal contradictions though. I remember Faust suggesting a possible explanation for Luna’s altered appearance.
IDW’s storylines are vetted by someone at Hasbro, but they have never revealed who that person is. It does sound like McCarthy’s new position (director/coordinator for girls’ storytelling, or something like that) would fit the bill.

I think both sides gave up, and just consider them both a separate canon now. But like I said, if a fan wishes they can consider them partly canon with each other, if they ignore certain conflicting things. (And honestly, this alternate “Moondancer” cameo above is pretty easy to ignore, and very minor to the plot.)
Kinda like how the Sonic comics are a different canon from both the games, and SatA.M. series.
Plus, the show has kinda contradicted itself at times too, like in Season 1 how Luna’s existence was ignored at the Gala, her mane changing, and such. (Though, I like her new mane.)

Nothing indicates that because nothing in the show references the comic. Or do you have another source to imply this is the case other than empty air?

Judging by the way the writers on the show are sometimes completely oblivious to what goes on in the comics, I wouldn’t put too much stock in that.

The comic borrows from the show. Word is consultants are frequent in order to make certain specific plot elements okayed in case they conflict with future plans. I never asked, but McCarthy is the most likely staffer to hold the crib notes of all the planned plot elements? I’ve sort of never learned her title, but I’ve always assumed it was boss lady once Faust left.

The comics much like EqG can be canon to a point, if the fan wishes, or not. Or unless contradicted by the show. It doesn’t matter really.

I’m the same way if I see a really well done fan project and it makes sense I accept it as information that wasn’t stated in the show… at least until they retcon it.

Heh, I can understand the gist of what you believe. Most of the holes missing in their personality traits can be determined through simple logic. :j
Sometimes I’ll get stuff mixed up a bit. I like to think Pinkie Pie hides her emotions sometimes, or gets depressed every now and then. I don’t think she would be violently psychotic or abusive like she is in some fanworks, though some people seem to like that.
Due to some fan animations, a whole lot of memes and the internet community I shared, I thought Rarity was a cruel and selfish pony for a while, until I rewatched some episodes and tried to understand her personality and motives better.
For Lyra and Bon Bon being in a relationship, first it was a popular fan idea. Then the show hinted at it really strongly for a while. I blame the fans for that one XD.
If I haven’t seen the show in a while, the show canon and fanworks kinda blend together a bit in my head. I’d have better examples right now, if I weren’t up so late.
MLP cartoon show, fan art, tumblr blogs, completely random stuff I see on the internet and like, and Equestria Girls and IDW comics near the bottom.
If I saw stuff in fanworks or IDW comics I don’t like, I’d try and deny it. If it happens in the cartoon, I’ll have to accept it as reality for the setting.
I like both versions of Moondancer. This comic version has the G1 colors for her.

You could just as easily say that to anyone desperately clinging to the idea that the comics are canon.
As far as it being a big deal or not, it obviously matters to our nerdy conversations about continuity theories and worldbuilding. Magical talking horses are super serious business dude.

Then what’s the big deal? You don’t like seeing them as canon, so what? Not like an issue from two years ago really has any influence on the latest episode, nor should it really matter. You don’t like it, fine, not a big deal, don’t make it out to be one.

He really doesn’t, not that it makes any difference. This comic is very clearly incompatible with yesterday’s episode. Aside from the re-identification of Moondancer, there is simply no way to reconcile the age gap between Twilight and the others. Why did this happen? Because the show feeds off its own continuity, and ignores the comics. That means they are not part of the show’s “canon.” They never were. Nothing in the comics have any bearing at all on the characters and events happening in the television series.

Mostly because the comics have their own interpretation of key aspects of the lore of the world that fundamentally changes them.
The comics are official, which means they are “canon” in their own setting, but they are not part of the show’s continuity.
