yes i know they call them books or something but yes it was around start of book 3 or something.
 
You can personally not like it, but all the writers came out and said their relationsip is canon. Its incredibly hard to argue with the entire writing staff of a show.

Except in that case the writers literally said they were in a lesbian relationship and around season 2 or something they cooked up that idea and tried to make it work in the show which was hard given how it also is meant to air in china and they have stricter rules on that than we do in the US.
 
But in this case, larson even if he WANTED to make lesbians canon he couldn’t even come out and say it unless he wanted to risk losing his job. The korra folks waited until after the finale to say it so they had no fear of losing their jobs so they could come out and say what they really intended to do.
 
So really this was all playfully skirting that line but its enough that DHX and larson knew what they was doing.

With everything else being on point, the verbal “quotes” around “best friends” was intentional.

Probably because many fans already have a strong headcanon that these 2 are doing it and therefore the writers tried their hardestto dissuade it. Keyword tried.  
And shipping isn’t the problem. It’s fans forcing a ship to be canon or saying it is when it isn’t that’s the problem.

The fact that they emphasized it so much kind of turns it on its head. Like they probably would’ve done more if not for censors. Do you remember the last time you lovingly caressed your friend’s cheek and stared into their eyes?
