It’s a lens… the lens of a Changeling eye, so you’re both right :) The Changeling has a shell-like lens over their eyes that can see through Changeling disguises. The ponies found this out during the “Great Equestrian War” and started scavenging the drone corpses after battle and fixing them into the armour.
