Where have I seen this before? Oh wait a second, in every Sombra fanfic ever! Am I the only one whose headcanon for Sombra has him as a warlord who simply took over the Empire by defeating it’s armies in battle?

The ironic thing is, the main reason Sombra gets hate, is due to him “Not having a personality/having no backstory/being a generic nasty villain,” and such. I think with him, you can’t please everybody either way.
 
One thing I will praise the comics on is, regardless of the varying results/reaction, they at least have the guts to delve into things, or explore things/characters the show never ever will.  
(Don’t expect a “Princess Celestia” focused episode anytime soon, guys.)

Also, quit jumping to conclusions over how “awful” it will be just by the preview pages. I get not having high hopes for something, but how about waiting for the whole story before jumping on the hate bandwagon?

Besides, I would think people would want a villain that has some sort of personality beyond “EEEVIL!!”. While I’ll save my final thoughts when this comes out, it doesn’t sound too bad so far.

Overall, I don’t mind Sombra having a reason for becoming a monster. People who are just plain evil for no reason are very rare in the real world, and make lousy characters. We got to keep in mind that an explanation is not automatically an excuse.

I don’t mind him being a li’l tragic/sympathetic, I just don’t want him to be a completely watered-down villain. (Like say Shadow the Hedgehog.)
 
I mean the guy was so evil, unrepentant, and badass, they had to kill him off.

Well, at the very least this will create another straight ship for Sombra, that while perhaps not as popular as Twibra or Lumbra, at least will be supported by something more than fanart.
 
And speaking of Twibra, I wonder what will be Twilight reaction to this tale…if IDW really goes all the way into making Sombra a tragic villain with a reasonable excuse, maybe Twilight will start to feel a little sympathy for him.

I think this is why the show doesn’t elaborate much on Celestia’s/Luna’s backstory, and such. Because of how divisive, or negative fans tend to react to that kinda thing.

I will agree that in general the comics have been “sloppy” at the timelessness factor of the backgrounds (ignoring the RD/Spitfire one, in which Fosgitt said they didn’t give him refs for how Ponyville should look).
 
It’s not a deal breaker, but for example, seeing English language characters feels out of place - everything they’re trying to go with this could be done using the form-less scribbles or blocky fake characters the show does, and explaining things that are written down.
 
And especially here, the timing - we know this should be 1000+ years fromt he show’s present, and we know that their society did advance during that time (from Family Appreciation Day, as well as from S4E1-2 flashbacks), so some aspect of things being less modern would be be better.
 
But again, not a deal breaker, just something I’d like to see them work on improving.

Dudes… This is just the first few pages of the comic. It might not even be ‘x had a tragic childhood’. From the looks of it, Sombra might become evil later in his young adulthood or something. We’ll just have to wait and see til April fools day. So don’t judge too quickly.

Grr! I’m not happy with this, and it has nothing to do with Sombra’s backstory as such.
 
No, what annoys me is that this is all supposed to take place in Crystal Empire over a thousand years ago, yet everything looks like modern-day Equestria! Take the panel where he’s at school; if they were writing with chalk on slate, and the “periodic table of elements” showed water, fire, air and earth, it would give a sense this took place long ago.
 
It would also make the whole “lonely and mistreated outcast” thing more poignant, making it a timeless issue. Here, I wouldn’t be surprised if the CMCs came around the corner.

Somehow I feel like it’ll turn out Sombra enslaved the crystal ponies for understandable reasons. Not good reasons, but at least relatable.

Who knows, perhaps he deliberately betrays and/or kill this sweet happy Radiant Hope just for the evulz…would that be blatantly heartless monster enough for you, people that want blatantly evil King Sombra?

If it does end in Radiant Hope dying or something, I will start to suspect that IDW probes my brains when I sleep.
 
Doubly so if it’s done in a way where Sombra sees Celestia as the villain.

And at the same time he’s discovering his dark past she’s going to leave him because her parents are moving/she got sick of him/RACIIIIISM, and that will finally force him to go down a dark path and become evil, the last shot being of him shedding a tear for the life that he could have had.
