Shoehorning stuff where it doesn’t really fit is the MLP fandom’s specialty. Just look up the Crossover tag for some prime examples.
 
Though that’s also the great thing about fanfiction and fanart, they don’t have to follow any canon if they don’t want to.

This picture is old so it was probably made before we knew anything about canon Changelings. Even then, there’s AUs and other fan related things to consider. Fan related stuff doesn’t always have to follow canon to a T.
