I came over here from /mlp/, mainly because of the alterations they made there on the uploads, (nearly every image I tried to post came up with “embedded file” and I got sick of it).
 
The crowd here’s generally okay, (there’s always the odd exception).
 
One of the reasons I stick around.
 
Got a much colder reception over on Fimfiction.

Every single time I’m on this website I switch immediately into pessimism mode; I automatically assume people will be jerks to me and I’m usually correct about that assumption.

Oh, no don’t get me wrong- I agree with you. Especially that pessimism and realism are not one and the same, since I certainly don’t consider myself a pessimist. I think you really did hit the nail on the head that true pessimists are rarely surprised (since they were already expecting the worst), and the worst happening still surprises me when I really was expecting better. I like to think being a realist is really about knowing things CAN go either way, where as optimists and pessimists tend to only expect one or the other.

Considering how fluid reality is, it’s hard to say if reality even exists much less how to define experiencing it. Perception really is everything; if you always think things will work out you’ll be disappointed, and if you think they’ll never work out you’ll sometimes be pleasantly surprised. If you try to keep in mind that things can be both good AND bad, even at the same time, you’re more likely to be prepared no matter what happens.

Perhaps then there’s no such thing as realism? I’ve been wondering about this for some time.
