Not yet we don’t. She’s due for a second coming and we’re likely to learn what her true deal is. That said, it’s clear she’s a pony who has a radical ideal of what “harmony” is and feels that everyone should abide by them for their own good.

Except we got a genuine backstory for Amon/Noatak. He was raised by an abusive father along with Tarrlok to be used as weapons of revenge toward Aang after he stripped their father of his bending. Due to this upbringing, Noatak saw bending less as a gift and more of a status to be used to push people around because of Yakone.

What do we know about Starlight’s backstory? ABSOLUTELY! NOTHING!
Background Pony #515A
Just as Amon believed bending caused an unfair advantage over non-benders, which lead to the existence of people like his father who abused their abilities in order to rule over others, Starlight Glimmer believes that certain special talents cause unfair advantages. They can create jealousy and resentment from those with talents “less special” then say Twilight’s(who makes all kinds of magic come easily for her), and thus cause strife and conflict as well as allow those with “superior” talents to rule over others(as Sombra once did), thus the only way to create harmony is to render all of them equal by force.

I guess we’ll know for sure this weekend! :D

What “wasted potential?” I liked how Amon was an antagonist who believe he was the hero of the story. He genuinely thought that he was doing the world a favor by removing bending (a big part of people), that the ends would justify his means. He thought he was eliminating those like his father but, like Tarrlok, ended up carrying out Yakone’s wishes unknowingly.

As “The Dark Knight” said, “You either die a hero… or live long enough to see yourself become the villain.” Tragically, Tarrlok and Noatak learned this lesson far too late.

You mean she’s a petty brat stirring up a make-believe perception of inequality among a gullible populace to take revenge out on benders because of her shitty father?

Yeah, I don’t think this is your Pony, Amon.

Well said. There’s a big difference between treating people the same and making them the same. For instance, treating red-haired people just as well as other people is good, but forcing everyone to dye their hair red is not.

equality in rights is something we humans do indeed share, but our personalities, our individuality, who we are as humanity is what makes us special. To be human is to be different. The same go with equestrians. The all benefit from equal rights, but to all be though as equal of each other in personality and individuality is not something you force upon a pony.

I think all humans are equal, but not the way you think. They are different, and everyone has it’s own talent, but that doesn’t make them better or worse than others.
I feel like this episode will be my punishment.
OneAmongOthers

Making everyone equal is just dumb in any shape or form. The premise of this opening episode is just as silly if you ask me. Avatar tried this, an episode of fairy god parents tried this… Pleasantville tried it and where did it get them? Diversity is always a better option. To be different is what makes each and every one of us special…

There I just pretty much laid out the entire episode in a nut shell.

Speaking of Avatar, she kind of has a point. Aang’s friends didn’t want to play with him when they found out he was the avatar.
