Tirek is the more competent villain, but Chrysalis is the more interesting one. With Tirek, it would be significantly easier for the story to just be completely over if the main heroes lose and he gets what he wants (contrasting Discord, who at least kept Celestia and Luna around, Nightmare Moon, who had members of the Mane Six working for her _{and it not being a bad story premise for her to take Twilight as an apprentice out of intrigue in general}, Sombra who had a war going on, and Chrysalis who still had a resistance when Twilight arrived, however hopeless it was under those circumstances), because he’s just that type of villain (he’d rather not take his chances with an unknown quantity like Windigos, for instance, unlike Chrysalis, who wanted to fight them at the height of their power). Chrysalis, while not stupid, enjoys her work too much for her own good, and is very narcissistic and prone to underestimating others, seems to have an addiction for elaborate schemes instead of simple ones, or her debut would’ve gone differently… not that she can’t be menacing, since she’s markedly more sadistic than Tirek is.

All villains are the best

Between the two of them, Tirek is better. His plan almost worked, he’s most levelheaded when the situation called for it, and he destroyed Golden Oak Library.

If reformed ones are included I’d definitely pick Discord, Starlight Glimmer, and Trixie as my top 3, but Cozy is at least one rank behind. She was a really fun villain, and if it wasn’t for her Chrysalis and Tirek would just fight forever and never even step out of their lair.

Considering that Chrysalis was great as soon as she showed up, was used three times throughout the series (four if we count that one episode), and Tirek wasn’t really that great until the final season…
