I like how she went from being hopeless and powerless and hated by everyone, even herself (perhaps especially herself), to someone who belonged somewhere and made a difference and was accepted. It’s nice pretending something like that could happen. And I suppose a big part is that even though I know it’s not remotely possible in the real world, I envy her unmaking and rebirth; I’ve often thought about how much better my life would be without me around to ruin it.
 
I know, we were done, but I felt that needed saying.

I don’t know about you, but Sunset pretty much comes off as a broken, confusing, incomplete character; she’s feels generic and undimensional as a heroine than she does as a villainess (in my opinion). she could’ve been the Vegeta of the Friendship Is Magic universe (I liked her better when she was evil); DHX made her out to be an untouchable Yamcha instead. if you find anything remotely redeemable about her as a good gal, fine with me – who am I to say otherwise? *sigh* time to move on and talk about something that won’t leave us walking in circles, like, why are The Dazzlings so amazing? :O …and why haven’t they returned?! >XO

The reset happened in the first movie and yeah, it was a bit abrupt, but undoing it afterwards would have just made the whiplash worse, and I think they didn’t do so bad with what they had to work with. I admit that Sunset isn’t a particularly complex character, but I still feel like “moeblob with a guilty conscience” is a step up from “generic bitch”.
 
And her lackeys were Snips and Snails. I don’t blame her for being frustrated with them. Hell, when she got corrupted, she shared power with them rather than brainjacking them like the rest of the teenage zombies. I’m not sure I’d have given them that.
 
She may not have literally not known there was another way, but that doesn’t mean she thought any of those other roads would lead to where she intended to go.
 
As for EG2? She did learn. She just learned by seeing it happen to her friends rather than it happening directly to her. Twilight learned plenty of friendship lessons in Season 1 from things that happened to the rest of the Mane Six.
 
Also, you seem to have absolutely zero idea how self-esteem problems work, otherwise you’d get why she was so hesitant to speak or act (especially after the one thing she did try on her own ended in disaster).

well, she might’ve had a few regrets, but there was nothing in EqG 1 that implied or has shown that she did. and she doesn’t have to care about her “subjects” to crave attention; all she wanted was to feel important and be given what she wants, hence her terrorizing the whole school to retain a position of power. in fact, there also wasn’t any hint of her giving a damn about anyone that wasn’t her herself, either! she even treated her lackeys like crap, for Pete’s sake!
 
bull’s-eye!… well, almost… her only redeeming qualities are that she’s sexy and sassy – everything else came after her forced character reset. and oh how I wish she was feigning her Heel-Face Turn! her changing for the better is neither plausible nor realistic; we don’t even get to see that she regretted her sordid actions and chose to change herself at the end of EqG 1, as her character was nothing more than “I love being a fucking asshole! I shit on people just for fun!” – her “reformation” lacks depth and substance. that’s why I disliked her in EqG 2: she had absolutely no trace of her old personality anymore; was the Yamcha for most of the film; and she does nothing that sends a positive message to her audience, as she’s all talk and no walk (the only good thing she did in the whole movie was help Twilight save everyone from The Dazzlings, that’s it!). oh, and she didn’t have to learn anything about friendship. why? because she knew everything all along; she’s the one who gives everyone the lesson at the end! isn’t she supposed to be the one learning friendship, not teaching it?! because something tells me she definitely knew there was another way; she was just lying about it in EqG 1!
 
oh, on a side note, I actually felt (and still feel) sorry for The Dazzlings, as they were some of the best villainesses in the FIM universe – they’re infinity times better than Sunset Shimmer was and will ever be! I WANTED THE BAD GALS TO WIN FOR ONCE! WHY DOES IT ALWAYS HAVE TO BE THE GOOD GALS? why??

oh, you know – because I don’t see Sunset as most fans do (my interpretation of her would definitely unsettle a lot of you guys here), I see her wanting to get even with him for breaking up with her. she doesn’t like when other people do not feed into her negativity, as she’s a slimy, dastardly attention seeker. she’d be too full of herself to regret her past mistakes.

The elements haven’t exactly been common knowledge. IIRC they were considered a myth (like Nightmare Moon was) until the Mane 6 found them.
 
Some people theorize that Sunset really have some feelings for Flash underneath all the Machiavellian high school bullshit, others think she was about to make her move at that point and he was small potatoes compared to Celestia.

okay, now I get it. but if the Elements fell into the wrong hands, they’d have to fall in the hands of people who represent the darker aspects of or the exact opposite of those Elements. well, not necessarily; Princess Luna once used them all to become Nightmare Moon – anyone can use the Elements for evil. I wonder, why haven’t the Elements been used for ill purposes more often? sure, that wouldn’t invalidate the Mane Six also being able to use them, but I’d like to see more instances of disorder resulting from misuse or abuse of the Elements. after all, we’ve seen too much of the “Using the Elements of Harmony Only for Good” shtick – give us something we don’t already know about them.

exactly. Flash definitely didn’t want to do anything with her; as she only used him for ill gain, he wanted out as soon as possible. during the time he and Sunset were together, he probably found out how she truly was with her schoolmates, especially his friends – I am thinking he was furious when she severed his bond with them; he confronted her about it, had a nasty falling out with her, and never talked to her again. I’m still puzzled and I have a lot of questions in mind… why wasn’t there any conflict between them in the first movie? and what about Twilight – shouldn’t Sunset have been upset that Flash was hanging around Twilight and not her? why didn’t Sunset retaliate when Flash broke up with her – couldn’t she have dug up some dirt on him to ruin his image or something? why didn’t Flash date other girls just to make Sunset stew in envy and rage? and why didn’t Sunset go after Twilight for allegedly making advances towards Flash? had more development gone into this sort of thing, I would’ve had a helluva time watching Sunset trying to also bring Flash down and not just Twilight… and failing miserably. if anything, this picture should’ve shown Flash not giving a hoot about her and going about with his own thing and Sunset breaking down right behind him, screaming her face off in fury with tears flowing down her face as she lunges toward him. …sigh… oh, what could have been – McCarthy could’ve given us the best high school flick in animation history, but she blew her one and only chance in doing so… and big time! here’s to hoping that someone else also has this idea so they can make it a reality. ;^)

I’m saying that attempts to misuse the power of the Elements, particularly in a parallel universe where the rules of magic are different, could conceivably backfire. This doesn’t really require the elements become corrupt, just the possibility of potentially disastrous mishaps in a few extreme circumstances.
 
I am in no way saying the Mane Six or Humane Five are the bad guys, where did you even get that? If anything, they keep the three elements that might not be purely good from manifesting their darker qualities. Can you imagine Pinkie Pie laughing at another’s suffering, or Applejack being knowingly hurtful in the name of truth (knowingly hurtful;, simple thoughtlessness that she later regrets isn’t enough), or Rainbow Dash pledging fealty to a malicious cause? No, you can’t. Not without fundamentally altering who they are.
 
And if we’re going to question everything the staff says, I can just as easily claim that two-thirds of the time The Movie was allegedly being worked on was actually spent drinking tequila and playing skee-ball. :P

I think he should just have kept on walking. Before Legend of Everfree, he acknowledges her existence exactly ONCE, and that’s while the sirens were jacked into everyone’s brains. What does he think of her? At the time this picture is from, I’m pretty sure the most she’d get is “we used to date or something”, maybe making it up to the level of “she kisses okay” if they got that far and she’s really lucky; seems like in the big picture she’s mostly just another “not Twilight” to him until Sci-Twi comes along and complicates things, though.

that’s possible, it’s true the Elements’ qualities aren’t necessarily good, but it would also mean that they would always work against the Mane Six… and the Elements of Harmony would never turn on their bearers! if they were indeed susceptible to corruption, then why in Paul McCartney’s name did the Magic one respond to – and protect – Princess Twilight despite Sunset using it and wearing it on her freaking head?! the Element of Magic, the one magical artifact wielded by Sunset Shimmer for her own twisted purposes, also went against her for fuck’s sake!

IIRC, when they were making the first EqG, they weren’t planning on there being a series, so they probably were just trying to head off complaints that when Twilight left and never came back, things would just go back to how they were.

How can they be so perfect when even the qualities they represent are impure? Honesty, Laughter, and Loyalty are all very capable of being used as tools of cruelty and harm. We even have a special word for when Loyalty goes horribly astray: “Fanaticism”.
 
And even if the Elements themselves are somehow immune to corruption, it’s clear heir magic can do bad things if misused, such as turning Sci-Twi into Midnight Sparkle. Sunset was misusing one element without the rest of the set, in another world where the rules of magic are very different, after stealing it. She’s lucky it didn’t go worse.

What are you talking about? Luna tried a couple times, then got pouty and decided to cancel the holiday until someone talked her out of it and solved the problem for her. And Starlight had the extra advantage of nobody holding anything against her. Sunset tried multiple times by herself to get into a good standing with other people and when that failed, she felt embarrassed and discouraged, like anyone would.
 
Also, knock it off with that “true self” nonsense. It’s self serving conjecture and it’s annoying.

okay, I am exaggerating. but every time Sunset was shooed away, she would get discouraged and start brooding and feeling sorry for herself because no one would accept her and let her fit in – instead of persevering, she’d give up. yes, Luna was intimidating, but she actually persisted in carrying on toward her redemption even when her subjects ran and hid from her.
 
you know, I actually miss bad bitch Sunset Shimmer; she at least had goals and dreams, expressed more emotions, used her skills a lot more dynamically (even if she only did so for her sick, perverted desires), and would fight tooth and nail to get where she wants to be in life – even if she was a monster and a blatant stereotype. the good Sunset Shimmer just doesn’t have any qualities that make her relatable or more likable than her old (albeit true) self; she comes out as a complete phony for a protagonist. on top of that, she’s also bland and boring. her change of character was too abrupt: in Equestria Girls, she was a heartless beast; in Rainbow Rocks, she’s a crying wreck. it’s like DHX don’t even care about the story, the character development, or the overall quality of the films themselves; they’ve probably grown blasé with their jobs – the lack of passion really shows in their works.
 
if you want good character reformations and redemptions, look no further than Vegeta (Dragon Ball Z) and Peridot (Steven Universe). those characters were actually entertaining despite being jerks to everyone else and not changing for the better the first (or second or third or fourth) time around. ditto for Starlight Glimmer.
 
I don’t hate Sunset, I just wish she came out better as a reformed villainess. instead, I grew frustrated and disappointed – a huge part of me withered away, for I had high expectations for Equestria Girls despite other fans’ initial reactions to the series. why do you think I like Adagio Dazzle and Starlight more?

Just because that wasn’t the entire focus of the movie doesn’t mean that didn’t happen. It was clear she was trying to to show she had changed with offering to help the CMC and volunteering to show the Dazzlings around. The problem with Luna was that she acted very intimidating, Sunset’s problem was that nobody believed that what she was doing wasn’t an act.

it only looks that way at first – but it’s because Starlight wasn’t given Mary Sue status after her reformation, while Sunset became an instant saint immediately following her defeat in EqG 1.
 
well, what about Luna? she was also shunned – after all, her subjects were still scared of her even after the whole Nightmare Moon incident – but that did not stop her from working towards reconciliation and being accepted. we don’t get to see any of that with Sunset at all!
