Yes, I think I shall treat Bubbles as her name, and Derpy is the affectionately-received nickname that her friends call her by.
But if she is Bubbles, then where are Buttercup and Blossom? :)
And no pony named “Puppy-Dog Tails?” :P
Yet all those names are still better than both Snips and Snails :P
Some already have actually, in fact her alternate name “Ditzy-Doo” kinda fell out of favor in the fanbase after the S2 “Derpygate” drama soured many fans on giving her any other name besides “Derpy.” Some fans, (even the passionate “Derpy”-name fans) still get mad if you call her “Ditzy.”
Some even try to go so far as to prove “Ditzy” is a completely different pony. Granted originally she was just an unseen pony mentioned in the “Winter Wrap-up” episode, but Faust did say they were considering calling her that as a clever callback to that episode. (Some fans assumed that might’ve been her anyways) She said “She can still be ‘Derpy’ if people want. I don’t want to step on anyone’s ‘Derpy’ love.”
She was also refered to by both names “Ditzy Doo” and “Derpy Doo” in scripts before.
I call her both “Derpy” & “Ditzy” personally. (Heck with the haters.) While neither name is “flattering,” they do sound kinda cute in a way. Much like the famed “Robotnik VS Eggman,” and “Bowser VS King Koopa” name-debates, I just consider both her name. Like one is a nickname, or something.
Not really sure about “Muffins” though. Never cared for that one.
