I think Trixie and Sunset seemed more corrupted than anything, and I just won’t get into the nightmares.
 
But the sirens didn’t possess anyone, they just influenced them, possession would imply much more control.
 
There was absolutely nothing to imply they themselves were possessed either.

Nightmare Moon, Nightmare Rarity, and more recently Sunset Shimmer. It’s not like there have never been possessed villains before. Also don’t forget Trixie who was also possessed and was possessed by way of a wearable accessory; necklaces are also wearable accessories… Also the Dazzlings were able to possess other students which leads me to believe that the power that possessed them was using them as a medium to channel out more possessive magic from to posses others. Look at Sunset who was possessed, the evil magic that possessed her was used to possessed other students and turn them into mindless slaves.

To add to that, remember in the movie after they were defeated, Twilight said they are nothing but ordinary teenage girls now which higly implies that they were freed of the dark magic that possessed them, that dark magic most likely being in the form of the necklaces they wore.

I thought they were ponies to begin with and were somehow possessed by the sirens’ evil magic and thus took on their form, much like how Sunset was originally a pony who, after turning into a human, soon turned into a demon or how Luna turned into Nightmare Moon after being possessed by dark magic.

Wouldn’t it make more sense for them to be their original selves? I would think it would be kind of jarring for Hasbro to suddenly say “Yeah, the Dazzlings are canon now, but they’re ponies now too.”

Not sure if you’re implying that Twilight never made any big achievements as a unicorn…

Sunset can improve as a magician if she likes. But I would never approve of her becoming an alicorn princess. She can set an example that one does not have to be a big powerful princess to make great achievements in life.

Well that’s kind of disappointing, I actually wanted her and Gold lily to be in S5, along with Sunset Shimmer and maybe even the pony versions of the Dazzlings.

You really think Sunset Shimmer has grown as much in magical talent and as much as a character in general as Twilight Sparkle, that would justify her being elevated to alicorn status? I feel like alicornhood is pretty much something that can’t be lightly thrown around and just given to anypony. You can’t just hand it out. Sunset Shimmer has definitely grown after the events of EQG2 but she has a long way to go.
 
Also in my headcanon, Skyla is Shining Armor and Princess Cadance’s foal, born genetically an alicorn like her mother was. Likewise, Luna and Celestia were born genetically alicorns. The magical process by which a unicorn can ascend to alicornhood is rare and requires tremendous inborn magical power, not only pertaining to schools of the arcane but also friendship. This is for example why even Starswirl the Bearded did not become an alicorn.
 
I don’t know who Princess Gold Lily is but it sounds like she and Sterling are just recolors to sell toys. Hopefully they never make an appearance on the show. Skyla I’d be okay with if she ends up as Shining and Cadance’s filly and it drives the narrative in a meaningful fashion. Kinda wish there were more canon interactions of Twi/Shining/Cadance that didn’t involve world-building.

I’m actually a bit surprised Skyla hasn’t shown up in the show yet, but the events of MMC have made it effectively impossible from a narrative standpoint to put her in.
 
And honestly, I won’t be surprised if, either in the series finale or possibly even the S5 finale (if they’re not the same thing), the Other Five get elevated to Alicornhood. At least then Twilight won’t be the only special one.
 
Regardless, I won’t be satisfied by anything less than Shimmercorn.

Seriously, people. It’s Hasbro. Making toy-only characters is just one of the things they do. Look at the Transformers Prime toyline. They gave us Hot Shot (retooled Bumblebee) and Dead End (retooled Wheeljack), who were never going to appear on the show.
 
And let’s not even get to the redecos of Starscream into Skywarp and Thundercracker, even if Skywarp and Thundercracker aren’t even on the the show.
