If this was an RPG, the conventional way of beating bandits is to destroy the crap out of them, make them beg for mercy, and then help yourself to their loot.

One scenario I would have liked to have seen is for Twilight to have incapacitated the bulls, but then they insult Applejack, calling her and her family cowards for relying on a princess for support. With her pride wounded, Applejack orders Twilight to let them go, in the hopes that they can defeat the bulls the old-fashioned (and hard) way.

Yes, so use magic to restrain them and have them placed in prison. They have violated the law. They should be held in confinement until a trial.

Not all perpetrators will go peacefully. There is a point where you have to assert your point, even if you have to use force. There is a reason why police shoot dangerous gunmen when they don’t yield. There own safety and the public’s safety take priority.

We already saw that in Friends Forever #12. Key difference: they tried the magical solution, and it didn’t work. It’s more effect to show friendship succeed where magic failed than to try and remove the magical option.
 
Yet maybe Twilight will use her magic by comic’s end. In which case I hope she’ll admit her friends had a point.

Why do people keep assuming that? I don’t recall any character saying that ponies are the only magical creatures out there.
 
Plus, they’ve proven to be a threat, magic or no. There are plenty of non-violent tactics to curb their aggression.
