Well obviously the Apple market is saturated, while the clothing market is not.
 
Theres an entire apple clan dedicated to growing a metric fuck-ton of apples. And they cannot do whats usually done, and try and run one another out of business with clever business tactics. Because they are all related.
 
Thus there are many more apples than are needed, with no way of reducing competitors. Also, apples are actually really bad for horses and can give them bad gas and serious intestinal problems in anything but small quantities - theyre like chocolate for dogs. So Applejack is the most flatulent pony in Ponyville, and pays high medical bills i guess.
 
Rarity makes clothes for a civilization that should by rights only have a vague idea of what clothes would even do. That kind of entrepreneurial spirit is excellent by itself, the fact shes excellent at it is a bonus.
 
If applejack wants to not be poor, maybe she should consider diversification of assets rather than relying on a high labor low profit business profile. Maybe grow some motherfucking pears at the very least.

This doesn’t seem like OP is trying to start shit, in my opinion. It seems more like OP is just saying, “Hey, that’s a little weird.” And it is a little weird, but it probably doesn’t mean anything.

Revenue minus expenses, my friend. Sure, Applejack’s farm brings in a lot of money, but it also costs a lot of money to stay operational, since the critters in the Everfree can’t so much as cough without taking out her barn and half the orchard.

Also, remember when the Ponyville town hall needed repairs? Who was the generous pony who offered to donate their possible rodeo prize money for the repairs instead of keeping that money for themselves? That’s right. It was Applejack.
 
Too bad there wasn’t some really rich generous pony in Ponyville. I’ve heard something about the element of generosity but of course even that pony can’t help if they don’t have the money.

Currency is currency. Whether it’s pennies or bill notes. It would add up eventually, and it would depend on the type of gem it was. IE: Diamonds > Rubies > Emeralds - Et cetera.  

Twilight is actually probably the richest in Ponyville, just saying

While the value of the gems really seems to vary, most of them seem to have only a little value. Seeing how common they are and can be given to someone just to look after their pets. Even Rarity uses them mostly in her dresses and for Spike gems are just food. One can find a lot of pennies on the ground but it won’t likely make you rich.

Losing a significant source of income will always mean financial difficulties, if your business plan depended on it. And it happened (and was solved) in one episode.

Now that I think of it, there should really be an episode about AJ using her position of “Element of Harmony” and/or being a friend to a princess as a means to pay the bills, and Twilight’s having none of it.

Ponies have been seeing paying and trading for things with gems.
 
So it’s canon that they would be a form of currency. It stands to reason that Rarity, a pony who’s magical talent is finding them, would be at least considerably wealthy.

Uhm, when were Rarity ever described as the richest pony in Ponyville? Considering one botched fashion show would (in her own mind) run her out of the industry. Not to mention the thing in “For Whom the Sweetie Belle Toils” and Filthy Rich. Lavish house? She practically lives above her shop.
 
Also, loan sharks? What?! Applejack merely stated that they needed the income from cider sales to tie them over through the winter (and presumably spring). You know when they don’t have fresh produce to sell. That’s not loan sharks or poverty. That’s just sound economic planning. That’s like me saying I need a steady income to pay bills, vacations and seeing “The Hobbit: the Battle of the Five Armies”.

Well, while I do agree there’s not much foundation for the idea of Rarity being rich (beyond her very much trying and often failing to act like she is), the threat of Applejack’s business going under has been a recurring plotpoint throughout the series, which doesn’t really make any sense when you consider how rare it is for ponies to wear clothes compared to how high the demand for apples is. This is really over-exaggerated, but it does have a point, it makes no sense that AJ is the one of the two whose business has struggled.
