Well, Rainbow Dash IS technically my favorite mlp character as fair warning, but I’m agreeing with you for different reasons then that, almost identical to your reasons. RD has gotten a remarkable amount of development, and there is too much mystery behind her family, origins, past relationships and her unusual connection to the Elements of Harmony.
 
I really do NOT know what was the original game plan was for Twilight, if there was one. Anybody on Derpibooru can give a list of two or three, not normal flaws, but moral blank spots Twilight has that are never addressed WITHIN the show. Instead of addressing them, by S3, they started putting her on the spotlight far more then before until she’s made a princess. And S4 was outright confusing. While the episodes at the end praised Twilight, they removed a bit more of her relatable quirks for more lecturing…while at the same time having a lot of lines of dialogue, many from Discord and some from the others, that made the watchers think about how wrong Twilight’s Designated Protagonist situation was. And yet the finale put her on a pedastal more then ever.
 
And after when we thought DHX was completely blind to this, even after she has her revelation in the comics… suddenly this movie comes out, and Twilight’s weakness of character is showcased instead of ignored! The movie outright mocked the singular focus put on Twi in MMC, and it even vilified the pressuring method of Celestia’s teachings to make Twilight some kind of ‘chosen one’, emphasis on the ‘one’. The movie’s morality not only gave me S3-S4 whiplash, it gave me whiplash from the very first season.
 
What I’m trying to get at is what is the point of it all? Put something on a pedestal only to morally knock it down? The target for any potential morality plot CAN’T be Twilight only, she’s only who Celestia made her to be. It has to be Celestia herself. I think that’s why they brought Discord back, he’s the perfect chaotic neutral character for such an event. Twilight’s basically the weak link connected to Celestia, and Rainbow Dash is the unknown factor who’s morals are more important then humility.

Given everything, I think it would be a nice change of pace to focus more on other characters.
 
Oddly enough, I think we should have a season, or at least a season opener/finale, or some sort of arc with Dash. I mean, she’s the only pegasus that can perform the Sonic Rainboom, something only heard of in legends. She’s the one who brought the main six together, she’s Scootaloo’s role model. She has a ton going for her and what the writers could do.
 
Now, Rainbow certainly isn’t my favorite character, as I’d rather have an Applejack or Pinkie arc, but Rainbow has more going for her at the moment that could easily be an epic movie all of itself.
