either that or the Apple Family repeatedly makes bad business decisions in various episodes?  
Refuse to hire help, making their business very inefficient?  
Or maybe ponies dont eat Apples solely so it isnt a necessity at all?  
Or maybe Rarity is near the pinnacle of her creative craft whereas the Apple Family are just one of many food suppliers?

Here’s something I don’t get. Rarity, who supplies a luxury good very few ponies who live near her business even use, and speciclises in high end fancy stuff almost no one in her boony of a village has much need for, has enough money to live a rather opulent lifestyle (her weekly spa trips come to mind) but the Apples, who supply something EVERYPONY needs (food) are somehow dirt poor.
 
I always figured the clothing store was just a cover for illegal gambling or drug running.
