The only way this could be drama is if you were a higher up in an ISP or part of the hilarious lobbying selling and buying of laws.

Worse case scenario, this thing gets passed. Worst for the ISPs as well as us, for once we’re told we’re too late and that there is nothing to be done, they only mean there’s nothing sensible to be done. Rioting’s gonna break out. Pass or not, the ISPs lose, with their buildings all burnt to the ground.
 
As lazy and uncaring as many people nowadays seem, a large evil being trying to take over will always bring us altogether. We’ll be at our strongest. They’ve made films and games out of this very concept. Usually with aliens.
 
I look forward to whichever way the cable companies lose this. You can’t fight the internet. And I also look forward to the day they finally learn that.

Fun Fact: Lamar Smith, the same person who was the force behind SOPA, is also pushing HARD to stop net neutrality because of his love for screwing people over and defining large corporations.

How many damn times are they going to try and pass some sort of net neutrality law?!

SOPA and PIPA failed because people were actually aware of them. There seem to be far too few people who understand what net neutrality is, which means less people are signing the petitions and calling congress. If we let it go without fighting it, the government won’t care. That’s why this is so important to spread around and protest against and not just wish for the best without taking action.

What you are describing is called “corporate censorship” it is very, very fucking bad.

ISPs currently define the act of providing internet as a “service.” Water/electric/gas providers define the stuff they provide as a “utility.”
 
You can’t charge different rates for the same utilities, so what the internet really needs to be defined as is a utility and you’re done.

Also, let me bring something else to light. SOPA was attempting to censor the net as we know it. If net neutrality goes and ISPs get the power to throttle website connections, what do you think their going to do to sites they don’t like or websites like this one who do fan art of IPs.

and yes it’s very simple to do that, simply limit the bandwidth is said site to the lowest amount possible and the server will ALWAYS encounter a timeout error.

They’re not allowed to until there’s a ruling from the court on it. Pretty much every single site that doesn’t pay up will be affected by it if net neutrality ends.

You’re missing the point. What you’re describing is just called a shitty connection; what they’re proposing we allow is for the companies to decide which sites are allowed to be fast or slow. No sites are actually going to get faster than they currently are for you, the “fast” sites will be the same as your connection currently makes them load at. The site’s that are unable to pay the companies or that the companies have a bias against will be slowed down because of this. If you think your internet sucks now, just try loading this site after net neutrality ends; it will most likely be impossible.

The difference here is they have the legal grounds to do this without having to jump through Congressional hurdles like SOPA did. No bill has to be pushed through, no politicians smooshed, just a change in a few lines of text.

Also, I should note that even WITH net neutrality, slow loading times are still frequently a thing that happens.

Honestly, none of the blatant attempts to censor the internet (SOPA, CISPA, PIPA, Trans-Pacific Partnership, all those other ones from the past couple years) have ever gone all the way through, so what makes you think that they can actually get rid of net neutrality?
