Was listening to this song on my iPod the other day, and I misheard this particular part of the lyrics. I seriously have to stop playing so much Quake 4, for it’s seeping into the rest of my life..

Makes sense. I didn’t have a good handle on modding games back then, so I never messed with the default settings.
Hmm, the original Quake was pretty good too, but I preferred the more sci-fi war of Quake II to the demonic battles of Quake.
Although I did have some pretty good expansion packs and mods which I found online, and including a mod I made myself which turned the high-speed rocket launcher into a low-speed tactical nuke launcher. It was a case of
Its range was such that the only thing which could protect the player was a wall; otherwise, its blast radius was much greater than the maximum level size. :P
Mostly it’s for the modding potential. I am already the proud owner of the original WAD files for Doom 1 and 2, the latter of which I am proud to say I actually bought fair and square rather than pirated, all the way back in 1994 too. Well, it belonged to my dad, but he gave me a shit-ton of his old computer stuff in like 2007 or 2008 or so, including the old CD-ROM games I used to play when I was a kid (I rediscovered Myst, Riven, the Nickelodeon Director’s Lab, and a couple Disney Interactive CD-ROMs, my favorite of which was the one for Toy Story, circa 1996 or so.) I actually discovered and first enjoyed Doom and Quake when I was like WAY too young to play them…like in the mid-90s, so I was 7 to 9 years old.
And now my precious WADs are still seeing action with today’s latest source ports such as Zdoom. About 86% of the appeal for me is playing the many different creative and fun mods people have made in the Doom modding scene which is still alive and active, as well as trying (and failing) to make my own shitty mods…but I also like laughing at other peoples’ badly-made WADs, some of which are pretty laughable and so bad they’re good…for me it’s a lot like the strange appeal that bad OCs or bad fanfics tend to have.
So tl;dr story short, I am skeptical about the Steam version of the original Quake, because I do not know how much it’s been tampered with and “updated” or “modernized” in a way that would upset older fans like me, who grew up playing the originals on DOS. I don’t even know if the Steam version would support mods, which like I said for me are the most appealing aspect of any old-school Id Software game.
A bit weird, though I really can’t blame you. Nostalgia is what it is.
What I really want most of all is the original Quake from 1996, with all its many expansions and crazy custom episodes. Yes, they do have it on Steam, but I’m a purist and I’m waiting to find an old copy of the real deal to install and play on DOSBox. Is that weird or not?
…although personally I’ve become hooked on Quake II and it’s mission packs. :)
