“Thing is, the show does have character development, but not instant character development. I genuinely liked Korra’s character and her arc in the first book, but it’s also true that she didn’t evolve that much. However, by Book 2, I doubt even the worst critics will say Korra haven’t developed at all. It’s not that she only got to have a character arc in Book 2, it’s that she had to go through everything she did - failure, mistakes, regression, learning, evolving - to reach the state she’s in at this point. It’s not a “waste”, it’s part of her learning. Learning isn’t a pretty, straight, progressing curve - it’s messy, and often when you’re in the very process of learning you’re more confused than ever, so you make even more mistakes than you used to. (See: Korra’s “bitchiness” in book 2).

It can be frustrating to watch, but in real life we often make the same mistakes several times before we learn (some people never learn) - it’s often a “two steps forward, one step back” kind of thing. People will disagree with me, but I like Korra’s character because she’s so realistic in that way - she doesn’t learn quickly or easily, she takes time. She had to change some pretty fundamental and ingrained parts of herself, she had to change her deepest self-view to even start learning properly - to be open to change and input. That takes a long time because it’s difficult. Korra had to go through a lot of shit to learn who she was and who she wanted to be, because she also had to let go of her previous perceptions of herself - perceptions she’d been building since childhood. She had to change to start developing.

I mean look at Zuko - how many times did he not regress, did he not make the same mistake, did he not have Iroh telling him how much of a jackass he was being. Hell, even by the end of the show he was still a jackass, but a much more balanced and self-aware one, one that was ready to sacrifice everything for the good of other people. He wasn’t a “complete” person, but he had learned and changed, and that’s why he’s basically claimed as one of, if not the best character on the show.”

I’m sorry, reverted how? For speaking up for herself. For being upset over how she was sheltered most of her life (contributing to the issues she had in Book 1)? For trying to save her Tribe the best she could?

O yeah while I have my issues with how Korra character development was handled in early book 2 (felt like nothing in Book 1 mattered and she reverted) everything following Beginnings has been a clear consistent arc and she’s grown a bunch, the people who ether go “SHE HASN’T DEVELOPED AT ALL” or “FINALLY SHE’S DEVELOPED” I think are usually people who have this view of Aang as the ideal Avatar, the paragon of Avatarness and think that for Korra to be a good Avatar she MUST be like Aang, which makes no sense because we’ve been shown that every Avatar is very different and they all have different ways of dealing with things, they basically want a Korra who isn’t impulsive and a aggressive at all which would rip out the core of the character completely.

I hate the idea that LoK needed to be as “great” as A:TLA. Like it can’t try to be it’s own thing without being constantly compared to its predecessor which, might I remind everyone, wasn’t seen as “great” until Book 3 was complete and fans developed nostalgia vision. Such a vicious cycle…

So… It took her dying, surviving, having her soul crushed, and potentially contracting cancer for the show to be considered good?

Completely forgot they did more seasons of this. I need to catch up and this makes it look all the more interesting.
