When we was child. We dream to be a hero. Dream to protect a beautiful princess as a knight…..But when we stop to dream about that?…When we lost to free to imagine….And start to judge another pony dream?
On the subject of OCs and a plot like this, why can’t the OC be a random guard or military servicemember, or even a civilian, who’s trying to help the Element Bearers in the problem of the week?
They’re basically civilians who happen to have a connection to superpowered artifacts, and now they don’t even have the artifact powerup.
It could bring up a discussion of whether you should leave the heroics to a designated group of trouble solvers or whether you should try to take responsibility for the problems happening in your own backyard.
The “OC marrying and raising a family with a main character” thing seems overdone and probably best left to a small save file on your own personal computer, or wherever you keep embarrassing self-insert ideas. Especially since this character has no real development.
@TheMadMan
as first poster said: ‘So, the person who commissioned these artworks wanted to marry Twilight Sparkle, conceive a child with her, and then die?’
That’s prime gary stu stylin.
@Princess♠Molestia
And I’m betting Stinkin’s father’s name was Gassy or some-such. Diamond Tiara has no idea how lucky she is.
But back to OC’s, folks have strong opinions and, in true internet fashion, they’re rarely constructive with their criticisms. Can’t please everyone, so you just gotta roll with it.
@PonyPon
Because its a pretty good example? If not for the magic scar thing most people wouldn’t even bat an eye at his appearance, he’d completely fit in-universe. Which is the main issue people tend to have with gary stu/mary sue special snowflake OCs, they don’t fit the universe at all, coming off as egotistical, lazy, or both.
@TheMadMan
Unfortunately, it’s a Catch 22. Some folks are set against OC’s before they even give the character a chance.
If an OC does anything supportive or helpful, many fans are quick to label it Gary Stu behavior.
If you hold your OC back to avoid this, then people ask why you even bothered creating a useless character.
And I’ve seen comments where characters who have quirks and flaws are still a Gary Stu, because those traits were just thrown in as a disguise.
I think the biggest issue here is that we don’t have time to know this OC before his death. We are introduced to him, see his death, and then find out he was Twilight’s husband. No time to get invested, so his loss has less impact.
@Robomorons
Well, yeah, I get that. Clutterstep is a really nice male OC, but a lot of the comments still call him a Gary Stu on the mere fact that there is hinted romantic attraction to Twilight Sparkle and, I may be reading into it too much, Princess Celestia.
With all the comments about the character in this comic being a Supa Edgyu Gary Stu, what would a male original character have to be or do to not be considered a so called ‘Gary Stu’? INB4, ‘Simply not exist’ or any variation of is not an answer.
This is a really epic and well portrayed silent comic page, and we could certainly do with more ‘Twilight vs Sombra’ related art.
You know, like, regardless of ultra gary stu stuff. :P
