If I’m not mistaken there are two interpretations, and at least one of them states that the (first) beast is the roman catholic church, not identifying anyone in particular. So the number would be far from being related to Nero.

616 was a mistranslation. See, the whole number thing was a political commentary saying that the Roman emperor Nero was evil incarnate. Remember how romans used letters as numbers? The Hebrew language did the same thing, and “Nero” in Hebrew added up to 666. However, some translations of his name add up to 616 instead. Believe it or not, but things only applicable to the time the bible was written are all throughout the thing, and people nowadays read it out of context and think it means something completely different.
