Twilight with a checklist isn’t exactly a very specific detail. Juuuuuust saying.
I used to believe it was 4, but a helpful BP pony corected me in another post, mentioning the season 4 premier.
“Both episodes are about the Summer Sun Celebration, and Celestia is happy about it now because it’s not about Nightmare Moon’s banishment anymore, but Luna’s return to her.
Check the episode, it’s after Twi is freaking out about her first royal task, with the checklist and all.”
I believe that at least 2 years have passed in-universe, 3 at the most.
I think the characters are all slightly older, (at least a year, or so) but I don’t think 4 (almost 5 now) years actually passed in the show.
Also, young characters never really seem to age in most cartoons. (Even when their voices do, the CMC do sound noticeably older now.)
I guess that makes sense, as long as you don’t consider that one season = one year. That’s stupid seriously, younglings like Spike or the CMC look the exact same since the first episode yet some people believe four years passed.
They already explained it in the episode, it took him a long time to recover enough strength/power so he could start to steal magic from ponies again, due to how long he was imprisoned in Tartarus.
Seems legit.

There were indeed a few “prison cells” that were conspicuously empty…
they did not think that far ahead perhaps, but it is a wonderful use of continuity and it makes sense. hell who knows what else snuck into the shadows when ceberus went for a walkie?
Mind blown. You’ve solved the mystery, but we must prepare for the dark times ahead.
