I see it like this.
“Facing your fears” mainly means face your unjustified fears. Like darkness or scary looking trees in the night.
But that doesn’t mean that you should never run from dangerous things like giant robots or hydras - except when you have to protect your loved ones.
When they realized that it wasn’t enough like a radio, they kept fiddling with it… and somehow downgraded it, I guess.
This requires some lengthy explanations. The reason why Luna got scared is because she was not expect that machine to pop up, so instinctively she ran, same with Celestia. However, Rarity was fixated to Sweetie Belle, who she thought was in danger, and which gave her a sudden rush of courage to take on that big machine. After Luna realises the situation, she comes in to protect Rarity and redeems herself I guess.
Well, she does come back around almost immediately, so…
